Battersea Off Leash Dog Park sits at the end of Battersea Street in Abbotsford, on the Parramatta River. It is a genuine waterfront off-leash area with a small dog beach, which is the standout feature over most inner-west parks.

The rules. Off-leash applies only within the marked area toward the Concord end of the park, near Hunter Street. Dogs need to be leashed getting to and from that zone. Keep your dog under voice control and able to return on command, and note the four-dogs-per-person limit. Dangerous or aggressive dogs are not permitted. Pick up after your dog using the bins provided.

What's there. The small dog beach lets dogs wade and swim in the river. There is a water fountain, tap and bowl on site, plus doggy bag dispensers and bins. The open grassy area has some shade but is not heavily treed, so plan for sun in the middle of the day.

Getting there. The park is at 35 Battersea Street, Abbotsford. Street parking is available but gets tight at peak times, so arrive early on weekends if you want a close spot. Sydney Buses running along Great North Road and Boronia Park are the nearest public transport option.

The beach area is fine at high tide, but watch for broken shells when the tide is out, they can be sharp underfoot for dogs that like to dig.

Nearby with the dogs. A foreshore walking path connects the park to the wider Abbotsford waterfront, and there are dog-friendly cafes with outdoor seating nearby in Abbotsford and Five Dock if you want to make a morning of it.

Sunday afternoons and Friday evening through the weekend are busiest. Tuesday mornings, Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings are the quiet windows if you want the beach to yourselves.
