The park. Quarries Park on Ramsden Street is a large, hilly open space bordering Merri Creek, with a semi-bush feel that is rare this close to the city. The pull is space and terrain - steep grassy slopes, open flats and bush-style tracks - available off-leash 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The rules. Off-leash across the reserve, but with the standard Yarra buffers: on-leash within 10 metres of playgrounds, within 5 metres of picnic and BBQ facilities, and on any sportsground while it is booked for approved sport or training. The park is unfenced - there is earth mounding to help define the space, but it is not enclosed, and it runs down to the creek and bush paths - so effective voice control is non-negotiable here.
The terrain. Expect real gradient. The slopes make it a genuine workout for an active dog, but the same steepness and long sightlines mean a dog with patchy recall can get out of view quickly. The natural landscaping and elevated spots are part of the appeal.
What is there. A car park on the western Ramsden Street side plus street parking, a large picnic shelter, BBQs, and a water tap with a bowl. The park has been through a dog-park upgrade, so facilities are in reasonable shape.

Getting there. Drive in via Ramsden Street or Field Street. The Route 11 tram (Stop 31) on St Georges Road is a short walk, and Clifton Hill station is roughly a 15 to 20 minute walk away.
Nearby with the dogs. Queens Parade and Heidelberg Road in Clifton Hill and Fitzroy North have plenty of dog-friendly cafes with outdoor seating to finish on.
When to go. It is busiest at the classic dog-walking peaks - roughly 6:30 to 8:30 in the morning and 4:30 to 6:30 in the late afternoon. Weekdays from mid-morning to mid-afternoon are the calm, roomy window, which also suits dogs still building recall on the open slopes.
