Fleming Park Dog Off Leash Area

Fleming Park is a central Brunswick East park built around a large grassy oval at 47 to 51 Albert Street, and its dog off-leash area runs 24 hours a day under Merri-bek City Council. It is one of the more practical off-leash spots in the inner north for a proper ball game, with parking, toilets and updated lighting for early and late walks.

The dog setup

The oval is off-leash around the clock, but dogs must stay under effective voice control. Keep your dog leashed within 15 metres of the playground and within 15 metres of the sporting ground fence, and off the field entirely whenever organised sport is on. Bring your own bags and use the bins provided.

Fencing is only partial around the perimeter, so this is not a fully enclosed park. A dog with reliable recall is fine here; a bolter or a new rescue is safer on a long line until you know how they handle the open edges.

Max: do a recall check before you drop the lead. The oval is open at the edges and close to streets, and the corners near the fence line turn to mud after rain.

The vibe

Expect a big open oval that gets genuine use, with seating, picnic tables, a playground, a nearby basketball court and public toilets. The ground is mostly grass that gets genuinely muddy in the wetter months, so keep a towel in the car through winter.

Getting there

The park sits on Albert Street with on-street parking, well-lit for winter mornings and evenings. Route 1 and 6 trams along Lygon Street stop nearby, and it is an easy walk or ride from the surrounding streets.

Close by with the dogs

The Lygon Street cafes with footpath seating are a short walk for coffee afterwards, including EL Mirage. If you want a fully fenced alternative, Gilpin Park Fenced Dog Park is the nearest secure option, and the Jones Park off-leash area is a few blocks east.
