Jones Park Dog Off Leash Area

Jones Park is an unfenced off-leash park in Brunswick East with rolling, undulating ground and a strip of wetland, open 24 hours. The hills give high-energy dogs a real workout, and the ponds and bridge make it a more interesting sniff than a flat oval.

The rules. Dogs run off-leash under effective voice or hand control, and you must carry a lead at all times. Keep your dog on-leash within 15 metres of the playground and within 15 metres of sporting grounds; dogs must be off the field during organised sport. The council does not supply bags, so bring your own and use the bins.

Worth knowing about the layout. The park is largely open and runs toward the roadway and the creek wetlands. This is a spot for a dog with strong recall, not one likely to drift off after a bird or a scent.

What's there. Drinking water taps with bowls, a playground, picnic spots and benches, small ponds and a walking bridge through the wetland area. Public toilets are on-site but can lock automatically after sunset.

Getting there. The park is at 9-23 Albion Street, with free street parking on Albion and Harrison Streets. It is a short walk from the Lygon Street trams and close to the Merri Creek trail if you want to extend the walk.

Nearby with the dogs. Dog-friendly cafes line Lygon Street to the west and Nicholson Street to the east, and the Merri Creek trail connects straight on for a longer loop.

Mid-morning or early afternoon is quietest. Weekend mornings fill the street parking on Albion and Harrison, so arrive early. Good for high-energy dogs that like a hill.
