A Minor Place is a converted weatherboard cottage on Albion Street, Brunswick, and one of the suburb's longest-running answers to the question of where to take the dog for brunch. The draw for dog owners is the rear courtyard, a quiet, leafy patch well away from the street, backed up by footpath tables out front.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome across the outdoor seating: the courtyard behind the cottage and the street-side tables out front. The cottage interior is food-handling space, so plan on sitting outside. Staff put out water bowls and have been known to fetch a treat on request. The courtyard suits a calm, settled sit; the footpath is better for a quick bite and some people-watching. Hours run 8am to 2:30pm, seven days.

The vibe

The kitchen runs a veg-packed, globally leaning brunch menu with halloumi, chilli scrambled eggs, honey brioche toast and an okonomiyaki that regulars single out, plus steak sandwiches for the carnivores. Vegan, vegetarian and coeliac options are covered without fuss. It is a local institution rather than a scene, and the pace matches: relaxed mornings, quick turnover of tables, and a regular crowd that includes a fair few dogs.

Getting there and parking

Find it at 103 Albion Street, Brunswick, between Sydney Road and Lygon Street. Street parking runs along Albion and the cross streets, mostly timed, and it tightens up late morning on weekends. The 19 tram along Lygon Street and Jewell Station are both an easy walk, and the flat residential blocks around it make for a good dog walk either side of brunch.
