The Retreat Hotel is an iconic Brunswick pub on Sydney Road, built around live music and one of the largest beer gardens in Melbourne. That beer garden is exactly where you and the dog will want to be.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome in the large beer garden, which is partly covered and partly turfed, so it works rain or shine. Footpath seating on Sydney Road is an option too, but the garden is far more spacious. Water bowls are available, and dogs need to stay with you at all times. Keep the dog leashed; it gets busy and music draws a crowd.

Good to know. Live bands play most days, with DJs in the garden, so expect a lively, loud atmosphere. The kitchen does pub staples, burgers and a popular vegan Sunday roast.

Getting there. Right on the 19 tram line on Sydney Road (Brunswick Road stop). Street parking is hard on Sydney Road; try side streets like Dawson Street or Galway Street.

Nearby with the dogs. Brunswick Park is a short walk for a stroll before settling in, and Sydney Road is good for a leashed wander.

Quieter in the afternoon before the evening music. Best for a confident dog that copes with crowds and sound.
