The short version. A G Gillon Oval on Victoria Street in Brunswick West is a large open sports ground that doubles as an off-leash area, with plenty of flat grass for a dog that wants to run and fetch. It is not fenced and opens onto the surrounding streets, so recall is the deciding factor.

The rules. Dogs must be under effective control and return immediately on command. Keep them on-leash within 15 metres of playgrounds, barbecues and picnic areas, and on-leash on shared pathways. Dogs must be off the field during organised sport, training or matches, which take priority on weekends. You must carry a leash at all times. This is a Merri-bek City Council site.

What's there. A big grassed oval with peripheral trees for shade and some bench seating. Waste bags and bins are usually at the entrances, but bring your own to be safe. There is often a water fountain, though a bottle for the dog is the reliable option. Lighting is limited, so it is a daylight park.

Getting there. Street parking on Victoria Street and nearby residential streets; off-street parking is limited. The 58 tram stops nearby, and it is a walkable distance from Brunswick Station on the Upfield line.

Check the sports schedule before a weekend visit. If a match is on, the oval fills and dogs need to be leashed and off the field.

Busiest weekday afternoons around 4 to 6:30pm and weekend mornings; weekday mid-mornings are quietest. Good for high-energy dogs who need open space to sprint.
