The short version. Holbrook Reserve is a long linear off-leash park running alongside Moonee Ponds Creek in Brunswick West, 24/7 off-leash and open in feel. It is unfenced, so it suits dogs with reliable recall rather than a fenced-park crowd.

The rules. Off-leash all hours, but dogs must be under effective voice or hand control at all times, and you must carry a leash and be able to restrain your dog promptly. Keep dogs on-leash within 15 metres of playgrounds and, during sport, within 15 metres of any sporting ground. No more than four dogs per person. This is a Merri-bek City Council area, and the reserve is unlit at night.

What's there. A drinking fountain with a dog bowl, bench seating, electric barbecues, and established trees for shade. The council does not supply waste bags here, so bring your own. The reserve borders the creek and residential streets, and it is a well-used part of the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail for walkers and joggers.

Getting there. The address is 8 Jewell Crescent, with limited street parking on the crescent itself. The 58 tram is the closest public option, a short walk away, and the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail makes it easy to reach on foot or by bike.

Nearby with the dogs. The Brunswick cafe strips are a short trip away, with dog-friendly outdoor seating at spots like Lux Foundry and A Minor Place.

The trail carries bikes and joggers and the creek edge is open. On busy mornings, keep a dog with shaky recall closer until the path clears.

Busiest on weekends and weekday mornings and late afternoons; mid-morning to early afternoon on weekdays is quietest. Good for confident dogs who like a long creek-side wander.
