Holbrook Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Holbrook Reserve is a long linear off-leash park running alongside Moonee Ponds Creek in Brunswick West, off-leash around the clock and open in feel. It is unfenced, which shapes everything about the place: dogs that come here get a proper creek-side wander, and the dogs that do best here have reliable recall.

The dog setup

Off-lead is allowed at all hours under Merri-bek City Council rules, but your dog must stay under effective voice or hand control and you must carry a leash and be able to restrain your dog promptly. Leads go back on within 15 metres of playgrounds and, during sport, within 15 metres of any sporting ground. A maximum of four dogs per person applies, and council rules also prohibit dogs from entering the creek and waterways themselves.

Facilities are practical rather than plush: a drinking fountain with a dog bowl, bench seating, electric barbecues and established trees for shade. The council does not supply waste bags here, so bring your own. The reserve is unlit at night, so winter evenings finish early.

The vibe

The shared Moonee Ponds Creek Trail carries walkers, joggers and cyclists through the reserve all day, and the creek edge is open. On busy mornings, keep a dog with shaky recall close until the path clears. Weekends and weekday mornings and late afternoons draw the crowds; mid-morning to early afternoon on weekdays is the quiet window.

Max: unfenced means self-restraint. I met four bikes, two prams and a jogger in my first ten minutes. If your dog chases wheels, this is not the reserve to learn on.

Getting there and parking

The address is 8 Jewell Crescent, Brunswick West, with limited street parking on the crescent itself. The 58 tram is the closest public transport, a short walk away, and the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail makes it easy to reach on foot or by bike.

Close by with the dogs

If the open format does not suit your dog, Gilpin Park Fenced Dog Park is about 1.4 km away with separate fenced zones, and Brady Reserve Dog Off Leash Area is another local off-lead option. Afterwards, Dalys in Brunswick West or Lux Foundry in Brunswick both welcome dogs at outdoor tables.
