Balfe Park Dog Off Leash Area

Balfe Park is a neighbourhood park in Brunswick East built around a large open grass oval that doubles as a soccer ground, and the whole park is a designated off-leash area. It is the kind of local spot where dogs socialise rather than sprint fenced laps, best enjoyed in daylight since the oval has no lighting.

The dog setup

Dogs run off-leash across the park under Merri-bek City Council rules, which expect them in sight and under effective voice control. The park is unfenced and opens straight onto John Street, so a reliable recall is non-negotiable. Keep the lead handy within 15 metres of the playground, barbecues and picnic facilities, and when organised sport is on, dogs must leave the field and go back on-leash.

There are no bag dispensers, so bring your own and pick up after your dog. The oval can turn muddy after heavy rain, and with no floodlighting, plan visits for daytime.

Max: check the soccer schedule before you go. Weekend games take over the oval and shift everyone onto the lead.

The vibe

This is a community park with a friendly local crowd rather than a destination. Monday and Tuesday mornings tend to be the quietest windows, while weekends fill with soccer and families using the playground, BBQs and public toilets. Drinking water fountains and bench seating around the oval make it easy to settle in, and the park is wheelchair accessible.

Getting there and parking

The park sits at 64 John Street, Brunswick East. Parking is genuinely difficult: the narrow surrounding streets are usually packed with residents' cars, so walking or riding the tram beats driving. The Route 1 and 6 trams on Lygon Street put you within a short walk.

Close by with the dogs

Lygon Street is a short stroll away and full of dog-friendly hospitality. EL Mirage on Nicholson Street welcomes dogs in its outdoor seating and keeps dog treats on hand. If you want a second off-leash session in the same trip, Fleming Park sits along the Merri Creek, and Merri Park in Northcote is another favourite with locals just across the water.
