Merri Park Dog Off Leash Area

Merri Park's dog off-leash area is a broad, mostly flat grass field in Northcote running along the Northcote High School fenceline, with the Merri Creek Trail and wetlands on its doorstep. The appeal is space for fetch and a proper run, but the freedom stops at the boundary, so it pays to know where the lines fall.

The dog setup

The grassy park area is off-leash under Darebin City Council rules, but it is open grass rather than a fenced enclosure, so effective voice or hand control matters. Dogs go back on-lead on the Merri Creek shared trail, within 15 metres of the playground, and stay out of the Merri Park Wetlands entirely to protect wildlife.

Carry a lead at all times and bring your own waste bags, since the dispensers are not reliably stocked. Dogs in heat, unvaccinated, or known to be aggressive should stay home.

Worth knowing

Tiger snakes live in the bordering woodland and wetland, most active in spring and summer and often in the late afternoon. Keep dogs on the mown grass and well clear of long grass and the water edge in the warm months.

Max: the off-leash line and the trail are two different things. Clip the lead back on the moment you hit the Merri Creek path, and in summer stay on the mown grass away from the wetland edge where snakes sit.

Getting there and parking

Street parking is usually available on the residential streets near the playground and sports field. Tram Route 86 to the Arthurton Road stop leaves a walk of about 10 minutes east, Merri and Westgarth stations are 15 to 20 minutes on foot, and the Merri Creek Trail brings you in from the north or south.

A water tap sits in the north-east corner near the playground, though a travel bowl is smarter than relying on it. Shaded picnic tables line the playground edge and public toilets are on-site.

Make a day of it

For an on-lead leg-stretch along the water, the Abrahams Reserve via Merri Creek track starts nearby and follows the same corridor your dog just ran beside.
