Merri Park Dog Off Leash Area

Merri Park is a large grassy off-leash area in Northcote, running beside the Northcote High School fenceline and opening onto the wider Merri Creek parkland. The draw is space: a broad, mostly flat expanse for fetch and a proper run, with the creek trail and wetlands on its doorstep. The catch is that off-leash freedom stops at that boundary, and there are real hazards to know before you unclip.

The rules. The grassy park area is off-leash, but dogs must go back on-lead on the Merri Creek shared trail and are kept out of the Merri Park Wetlands entirely to protect wildlife. Carry a lead at all times and keep your dog under effective voice or hand control so it does not rush other people or dogs. Waste bags are your responsibility, and dispensers are not reliably stocked, so bring your own. Dogs in heat, unvaccinated, or known to be aggressive should stay home. What is there. The park is mostly open, flat grass, ideal for energetic play. A water tap sits in the north-east corner near the playground, though a portable travel bowl is smarter than relying on it. Shaded picnic tables and seating line the playground edge, and public toilets are on-site.

Getting there. Street parking is usually available on the surrounding residential streets near the playground and sports field. By tram, take Route 86 to the Arthurton Road stop and walk about 10 minutes east. Merri and Westgarth stations are both a 15 to 20 minute walk, and you can also reach the park on foot along the Merri Creek Trail.

Watch-outs. Tiger snakes are known in the bordering woodland and wetland areas, most active through the warmer spring and summer months and often in the late afternoon. Keep dogs on the open grass and away from long grass and the water edge in that season.

Nearby with the dogs. The High Street strip has several dog-welcoming cafes for after a run, with outdoor courtyards and water bowls the norm. Welcome to Thornbury, a large food-truck beer garden a short way north, is a reliable dog-friendly wind-down.

When to go. The park is busiest early morning, around 7 to 9am, and again late afternoon from about 4:30 to 6:30pm when locals bring dogs after work. For a quieter session, or if your dog is easily overstimulated, aim for mid-morning to early afternoon.
