Abrahams Reserve via Merri Creek Track

Abrahams Reserve sits on the Merri Creek at Northcote's southern edge, on the Brunswick East border between Harrison Street and Donald Street. The walk out along the Merri Creek Track from here is a flat, paved return of around 6.3 kilometres that takes most walkers a bit over an hour, and it doubles as a link into the wider creekside network in either direction. Dogs are welcome for the length of it, on a lead.

Leash status

The trail and creek corridor are strictly on-lead, around the clock, under Darebin's pets-in-parks rules: no time-of-day window turns this stretch off-lead. The grassy reserve area has a signposted off-lead zone where dogs can run free, but leads go back on within 15 metres of the playground, inside the wooded creek banks and wetland sections, and along the shared path itself. If your dog needs a proper free run, the nearby Merri Park Dog Off Leash Area is the designated spot, with Fleming Park Dog Off Leash Area across the border in Brunswick East as another option.

Water

A drinking tap sits near the playground in the reserve's north-east section, but it frequently has no bowl attached, so carry water and a travel bowl rather than counting on it. There is little shade along the track, which shortens the comfortable walking window on warm days.

Hazards

The path narrows in places and is shared with cyclists and joggers moving quickly, so a short lead through busy stretches keeps everyone comfortable. Keep dogs out of the dense creek-side vegetation and wetlands: tiger snakes are active there in the warmer months, and the habitat is sensitive. The velodrome in the reserve is a curiosity for humans rather than dogs, best admired from the fence.

Getting there and parking

On-street parking lines Harrison Street on the Brunswick East side. By public transport, tram 11 along St Georges Road stops within walking distance of the creek, and Merri station on the Hurstbridge line is also close. Early mornings and evenings are the quiet and cooler stretches; midday in summer is the least pleasant time given the exposure.
