Abrahams Reserve via Merri Creek Track

Abrahams Reserve sits on the Merri Creek in Northcote, right on the Brunswick East border between Harrison Street and Donald Street, and the walk out along the Merri Creek Track is a flat, paved 6.3 km stretch that suits dogs of any age or fitness level.

The walk. This is an easy, 6.3 km return route on a smooth bitumen path, rated easy grade and taking most walkers around 77 minutes at a relaxed pace. The trail follows the creek through bushland and connects into the wider Merri Creek network, so you can extend it in either direction if your dog has more energy to burn.

The rules. Dogs must stay on lead throughout the reserve, except in the signposted off-leash zone in the grassy area just north of the Harrison Street and Donald Street intersection. Darebin City Council manages the reserve and requires dogs to stay at least 15 metres from any playground at all times, on or off lead. Dogs are also kept out of the densely wooded creek bank and wetland sections, where tiger snakes are active.

Water. There is a drinking tap near the playground in the northeast section, but it often has no bowl attached, so carry water for your dog rather than relying on it.

Hazards. The path narrows in places and is shared with cyclists and joggers, so keep dogs on a short lead through those stretches. The trail is also highly exposed with very little shade, which matters more than the distance suggests on a warm day.

Getting there. On-street parking is available around Harrison Street in Brunswick East. Tram 11 along St Georges Road stops at Miller St/St Georges Rd, a short walk west to the creek, and Merri Station on the Epping/Hurstbridge line is also within walking distance.

Nearby with the dogs. For a coffee stop afterwards, both Red Door Corner Store in Northcote and The Old Dog Cafe in Thornbury have dog-friendly outdoor areas. To keep walking the same creek, head downstream to the Merri Creek Trail in Fitzroy North, or upstream to the Merri Creek Track via Coburg Lake Loop in Coburg.

Go early morning or late afternoon given the lack of shade, and midweek if you want the off-leash paddock to yourself. Good for seniors and nervous walkers, thanks to the flat, predictable surface underfoot.
