Merri Creek Trail

Merri Creek Trail follows the creek through Fitzroy North, a mostly paved shared path popular with cyclists, walkers, and dogs on lead. The full route runs 15.8 km with easy grading, but most people walk a shorter section rather than the whole thing, and that works just as well for a dog outing.

The walk. The path is well maintained and mostly paved, with a mix of open grass and shady, tree-lined stretches close to the water. Rated easy at 1/5 difficulty, the full length takes around 3.5 to 4 hours, but shorter sections are common and easy to plan around. Gravel side paths branch off the main route and can offer more solitude if the paved path feels busy with bikes.

The rules. Yarra City Council requires dogs to be on lead along the Merri Creek Trail shared path and near environmentally sensitive sections of the creek corridor. Thomas Kidney Reserve is the one council-designated off-lead area verified here, though owners should still carry a lead and keep dogs under reliable voice or hand control even there. Dogs must stay out of wetlands and other sensitive sections to protect wildlife such as platypus and lizards along the creek.

Hazards. Grassy sections can hold snakes, particularly in warmer months, so stay alert on and off the path. Cyclist traffic moves quickly along the shared path, which is part of why the on-lead rule applies there. Heavy rain can flood parts of the trail, leaving it unwalkable for a few days afterwards, so check conditions if there has been recent wet weather.

Getting there. Rushall Station sits near the trail for train access, though dogs must stay on lead on the platform. Tram route 11 along St Georges Road stops near the trail with a short walk to the creek. Street parking is limited but available on residential streets such as Holden Street in East Brunswick and various streets in North Fitzroy.

Nearby with the dogs. Further along the same creek, the Merri Creek Track via Coburg Lake Loop and the Abrahams Reserve via Merri Creek Track in Northcote extend the walk in either direction. For off-lead time, head to Edinburgh Gardens Off-Leash Area. A short walk off the trail, Madera Bar & Cafe is dog-friendly for a break.

When to go. Weekday mornings before 7:30am or evenings are quietest. Saturday mornings draw heavy cyclist and pedestrian traffic, worth avoiding with a dog reactive to bikes or other dogs. Good for owners after an easy, flat walk with flexible distance.
