Edinburgh Gardens Off-Leash Area

Edinburgh Gardens is the inner-north's big social off-leash park, a broad stretch of grass and mature trees bordered by Alfred Crescent, St Georges Road and Brunswick Street North, with the eastern half of the gardens set aside as the off-leash zone.

The rules. Off-leash applies across the eastern section, but dogs must go back on lead within 10 metres of playgrounds and any sporting ground in active use, and within 5 metres either side of shared paths. Dogs are not permitted on W.T. Peterson Oval at any time, and fenced sports grounds are off-limits too. Mulched garden beds are a no-go. Wherever your dog is off-leash, Yarra City Council requires it to stay under effective voice control, and you're expected to clean up immediately (bins and bags are provided).

What's there. A water tap and bowl sit near the pavilion on the central-eastern side, along with public toilets. Shade is easy to find under the mature trees, and benches are dotted throughout for owners happy to sit and watch.

Getting there. The Route 11 tram runs along St Georges Road with a stop close to the gardens. Parking is limited, mostly free 2-hour street parking on Alfred Crescent and the surrounding residential streets, so it pays to arrive early on weekends. It's an easy walk from Fitzroy, North Carlton and Clifton Hill.

Nearby with the dogs. Cafe Piccante and other spots along St Georges Road and Brunswick Street have outdoor tables that take dogs, useful for a coffee before or after a run around.

Weekday mid-mornings are the quiet window. Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 1pm, and any sunny afternoon after 4pm, draw the biggest crowds, so plan around those if your dog needs space to run without a scrum of other dogs.
