Edinburgh Gardens Off-Leash Area

Edinburgh Gardens is the inner north's big social off-leash park, a broad stretch of grass and mature trees bordered by Alfred Crescent, St Georges Road and Brunswick Street North. Roughly half the parkland, the eastern section, is designated off-leash, and it draws a steady local dog crowd seven days a week.

The dog setup

The eastern half of the gardens is off-leash 24 hours a day under Yarra City Council rules, with dogs required to stay under effective voice control the whole time. Leashes go back on within 10 metres of playgrounds and any sporting ground in active use, and within 5 metres either side of shared paths. W.T. Peterson Oval is off-limits to dogs at all times, fenced sports grounds are a no, and dogs stay out of the mulched garden beds. Bins and bags are provided, and you are expected to clean up immediately.

The vibe

This is a proper community hub rather than a quiet patch of grass. Grand old trees give easy shade, benches are dotted around for owners who like to sit and watch, and a water tap and bowl near the pavilion on the central-eastern side handle the hydration, with public toilets alongside. The pavilion and tennis court end fills up fast with picnics on sunny weekends, so nervous dogs do better near the tree line at the St Georges Road end.

Max: head for the northern end near the St Georges Road trees if your dog is crowd shy. The pavilion end turns into picnic central on a sunny Saturday.

Getting there and parking

The Route 11 tram along St Georges Road stops close to the gardens, and it is an easy walk from Fitzroy, North Carlton and Clifton Hill. Parking is mostly free two-hour street parking on Alfred Crescent and the surrounding residential streets, which gets tight on weekends, so arrive early if you are driving.

Make a day of it

Cafe Piccante on St Georges Road has outdoor tables that take dogs, handy for a coffee before or after a run around. For a longer outing, the Merri Creek Trail starts within walking distance and adds a creekside leg stretch. When the pub calls afterwards, the dog-friendly Rochester Castle Hotel beer garden is a few minutes south.
