Yarra River Short City Loop

The Yarra River Short City Loop is a 4 km circuit along both banks of the Yarra through central Melbourne, flat, sealed and doable in under an hour. It is a city walk rather than a nature one, and its value is practical: you can do it on lead straight off a tram stop, with skyline views, boat sheds and public art for scenery, and no planning at all.

The walk

Four kilometres, rated easy, around three quarters of an hour at a relaxed pace. Sealed promenade runs along both sides of the river, with bridges at either end closing the loop. The usual route starts near Princes Bridge, heads east through Birrarung Marr, crosses at Swan Street Bridge or the quieter heritage Morell Bridge, then returns along the southern bank. No climbing and no rough ground anywhere, but the surface is shared with runners, cyclists, scooters and a lot of foot traffic, which is the real difficulty of this walk.

Leash status

City of Melbourne is the land manager, and dogs must be on lead in public places here unless you are inside a designated off-leash area. There is no off-lead section on the loop itself, so this is a full on-lead outing. The city recommends keeping leads to a couple of metres on busy shared paths, and with cyclists bearing down on the narrow promenade stretches you will want exactly that.

Max: four kilometres of river, three bridges, and one espresso with my name on it at the end. City walks are not so bad.

Water

This is the city, so taps and cafes are never far, but there is nothing dog-specific on the promenade itself. Carry a collapsible bowl and fill at the fountains in Birrarung Marr. Bins are plentiful along both banks, so waste is not the logistics problem it is on most walks.

Getting there and parking

Public transport is the sensible entry: Flinders Street Station sits beside the western end of the loop, and tram routes along Flinders and Swanston streets put you minutes from the river. Parking is expensive and tight in the CBD, so if you drive, aim for the Southbank or Birrarung Marr ends where parking is more obtainable.

When to go

Early morning or evening on a weekday. The promenade is busy through the middle of the day and at lunchtime, and the crowds, scooters and bikes are the whole challenge here. Good for senior dogs and for dogs genuinely unbothered by a busy footpath; a nervous dog will not enjoy this circuit at peak times.

If your dog needs an off-lead run before or after, the fenced enclosures at Southbank Small Dog Park and Moray Street Reserve are the nearest options. The Capital City Trail and the Flinders Street to Chapel Street riverside walk both extend the same walking, and Caretaker's Cottage takes dogs at the end of it.
