Caretaker's Cottage

Caretaker's Cottage is a small, dog-welcoming bar in a century-old former church caretaker's cottage at 139-141 Little Lonsdale Street, in the Melbourne CBD near the State Library. It is genuinely tiny, around 50 people at capacity, so it suits a calm dog and a quiet drink rather than a big group.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome in the front bar and the limited outdoor seating out the front. Because the room is so small and dimly lit, this works best for a settled dog that is comfortable in a confined, cosy space. Staff are accommodating, but bring your own water bowl to be safe rather than assume one.

Good to know. The bar pours Guinness on tap, a well-regarded house martini and a rotating cocktail list, and runs an analogue vinyl sound system. It earned a place on the World's 50 Best Bars list, so it can fill quickly on weekend nights when a packed room is harder on a dog.

Getting there. It sits just off the main strip, close to Melbourne Central Station and the Swanston Street trams. Street parking is limited and paid, with paid lots nearby for longer stays, so public transport is the easier option.

Nearby with the dogs. The State Library lawns are a short walk for a quick stretch, with Flagstaff Gardens a few blocks away and Carlton Gardens to the north-east for a longer on-leash walk before or after.

When to go. Opening hours are typically late afternoon onwards, so an early-evening weeknight visit gives you the calmest room. Confirm current hours before heading in, as a small venue can book out.
