Caretaker's Cottage

Caretaker's Cottage is a small bar in a century old former church caretaker's cottage at 139-141 Little Lonsdale Street, tucked into the Wesley Place precinct a block from the State Library in the Melbourne CBD. It takes roughly 50 people at capacity, all up, which shapes everything about bringing a dog here.

The dog setup

Well behaved dogs are warmly welcomed, and the staff look after canine guests with water and comforts to spare. There is a small outdoor seating area in the shared courtyard space of the Wesley Place precinct, and the compact front bar also suits a settled dog.

The room is dim, cosy and tight on space, so this is a calm dog venue rather than a big night out with a restless one. It is strictly walk in with no reservations, so arriving close to the 4pm opening is the reliable way to get a table with your dog beside you.

The vibe

Guinness on tap, a well regarded house martini and a rotating cocktail list carry the drinks, and music comes off an analogue vinyl system. The bar has picked up international recognition, so weekend evenings pack the little room out; a weeknight is easier on everyone.

Getting there

The cottage sits just off Swanston Street, close to Melbourne Central Station and the Swanston Street tram lines, so public transport is the easy option. Street parking nearby is limited and paid, with paid lots around for longer stays.

While you're out there

The State Library lawns are a short walk for a quick stretch on lead, and for a proper run the Fawkner Park Dog Off Leash Area is a tram ride south. The Yarra River short city loop makes a good lead walk to earn the drink.
