The basics. Hertford Road Reserve is a 1.4-hectare open reserve in Doncaster East with a large central green for off-leash exercise, popular with locals and families through the morning and afternoon. The main draw is plenty of flat, open running room.

The rules. Dogs are off-lead on the central open grass under effective voice control. The reserve is not fully fenced and sits among residential streets, so close supervision and reliable recall are needed near the edges. On-lead within 15 metres of the playground, BBQs and picnic areas, and during any active sport. Pick up after your dog; bags are usually at the bins.

What's there. A playground (upgraded in 2017) with climbing structures, swings and slides, a pavilion, shelters and bench seating. Reports on a dog water tap are inconsistent, so bring your own water. Parking is in a dedicated car park off Hertford Road, plus street parking.

Getting there. At 4 Hertford Road, with flat, easy access from the car park to the main green. A short drive from cafes on Jackson Court and Blackburn Road.

When to go. Quietest mid-morning and mid-afternoon on weekdays; busiest on weekend mornings and the weekday school-run window around 3.30 to 4.30pm. Limited shade means water on sunny days, and because it is unfenced, dogs should be comfortable with cars passing on the nearby streets. Good for an open, social off-leash run.
