Hertford Road Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Hertford Road Reserve is a 1.4 hectare neighbourhood reserve in Doncaster East built around one large central green, and that open grass is the reason dog owners keep coming back. This is an unfenced, come-and-go off-leash reserve rather than an enclosure, popular with locals and families through the morning and afternoon, and there is enough flat running room for a proper ball session without colliding with anyone.

The dog setup

Dogs run off-lead on the central open grass under effective voice control. The reserve is not fenced and it sits among residential streets, so reliable recall matters near the edges where the grass meets the footpaths. Manningham's standard conditions apply: leads go back on within 15 metres of the playground, the BBQs and picnic areas, and during any active sport, and waste gets picked up immediately, with bags usually available at the bins.

Max: treat this like any unfenced reserve on a suburban street. If your dog's recall falls apart near roads, keep the lead on until you are well clear of the edges.

Getting there and parking

The reserve is at 4 Hertford Road, and access is easy: a dedicated car park sits off Hertford Road, with street parking as a backup. The walk from the car park to the main green is flat and short, which suits older dogs and anyone wrangling kids as well. The cafes along Jackson Court and Blackburn Road are a few minutes away by car for the post-run coffee.

Worth knowing

Facilities are family-oriented rather than dog-specific: a playground upgraded in 2017 with climbing structures and swings, a pavilion, shelters and bench seating. Reports on whether there is a working dog water tap are inconsistent, so bring your own bowl and water. Shade is limited on the open grass, which matters on summer afternoons. Quietest windows are mid-morning and mid-afternoon on weekdays; the park fills on weekend mornings and again in the school-run stretch from about 3.30 to 4.30pm.
