Ruffey Lake Park

Ruffey Lake Park is a 68 hectare regional park in Doncaster East that Manningham City Council manages with a patchwork of off-leash and on-leash zones, and it is one of Melbourne's east's best big-space options for a dog that needs more than a neighbourhood reserve. Expect open rolling grass, bushland pockets and a lake at the centre of it all.

The rules

The large hillside areas around King Street Hill, Botanic Hill and McCallum Road Hill are designated off-leash, provided your dog is under effective voice or hand control. Nothing here is perimeter fenced, so a solid recall matters, especially with the lake and Ruffey Creek drawing dogs towards the water.

Leash rules bite around the busy hubs: dogs are on-lead near the Victoria Street adventure playground, the Church Road barbecue area and the Quarry Amphitheatre, and banned from soft-fall playground surfaces. Some fenced pockets protect revegetation plantings, and dogs must stay out of those too. Carry a leash at all times and use the bins for pick-up.

Max: treat a park like this as a recall test, not a free run. I clip the lead back on before we get anywhere near the playground zone, well before the signs would insist on it.

What's there

Beyond the off-leash hills you get sealed walking paths around the lake, plenty of shade trees, toilets, barbecues and picnic shelters, which makes it an easy joint outing with family members who did not bring a dog. The lake loop alone is a solid walk, and the terrain gives bigger dogs a genuine workout.

Getting there

Main entrances sit off Victoria Street, The Boulevarde and Church Road in Doncaster East, each with its own car park, so pick based on which part of the park you want. The park is roughly 20 kilometres east of the Melbourne CBD via the Eastern Freeway and Doncaster Road.

Close by with the dogs

If your dog does better inside a fence, swap to the Aranga Reserve Fenced Dog Park in Donvale or Banksia Park Fenced Dog Park in Bulleen. For a quieter open-space option, Zerbes Reserve Dog Off Leash Area is a local favourite on Blackburn Road.

When to go

Weekday mornings are calm and cool, and the park is big enough to absorb weekend crowds if you walk up the far hills. Give the playground precincts a miss on Saturday and Sunday afternoons when they are at their busiest, and go early in summer before the open grass bakes.
