Ruffey Lake Park

The basics. Ruffey Lake Park is a 68-hectare expanse off The Boulevarde in Doncaster, the biggest green space in Manningham and a genuine destination walk rather than a quick suburban loop. The draw is scale and variety: a lake, wetlands, hilly grassland and kilometres of path, with large off-leash zones away from the busy family precincts.

The rules. Most of the park is off-leash under effective voice control, but several pockets are on-lead and worth knowing before you let the lead off. Dogs must stay on-lead near the Victoria Street playground, the Church Road BBQ area and the Quarry Amphitheatre, and within the standard 15-metre buffer of any play equipment, barbecue or organised event. Dogs are not allowed in the soft-fall areas under playgrounds. The park is unfenced and undulating, so reliable recall matters, especially near the lake edge.

What's there. Drinking fountains with dog bowls, waste bags and bins throughout, public toilets, BBQ and picnic facilities, and an extensive network of sealed and gravel paths. The western side has the most open off-leash room; the playground precincts stay busier with families.

Getting there. Multiple entrances with free parking on The Boulevarde, Victoria Street and Church Road. From the Eastern Freeway take the Doncaster Road exit, or come via Manningham Road. The Boulevarde entrance is the most direct way into the main parkland. Buses 293, 295 and 902 run the surrounding streets.

Watch-outs. Snakes are active in the warmer months in the longer grass and wetland margins, so keep dogs on paths and in sight from spring through autumn. The hills make this a real workout in summer heat; carry water.

When to go. Early mornings and weekday evenings are calmest and give you the open western slopes to yourselves. Sunday afternoons and weekends are the busiest. Good for big dogs that want a long, varied run.
