Ruffey Lake Park Dog Off Leash Area

Ruffey Lake Park is Doncaster's biggest dog space: 68 hectares of grassed hills, creek-side paths and bushland off The Boulevarde, with most of the western and southern sections open to off-leash dogs under effective voice control. If you want room for an active dog to genuinely run, this is the pick in Manningham.

The dog setup

Manningham Council designates the western and southern parts of the park, broadly south of the creek, as off-leash, taking in the hills around King Street Hill and Botanic Hill. The north-eastern zone is on-leash, covering the Victoria Street playground, the Church Road BBQ area and the Quarry Amphitheatre, and dogs need to be leashed again on the paved shared paths and near the Boulevarde playground. Keep at least 15 metres from play equipment and barbecues, stay out of the fenced picnic and playground areas entirely, and skip the fenced-off revegetation pockets where dogs are excluded to protect new plantings. The perimeter itself is unfenced, so solid recall matters, and signage can change lead zones, so read the council signs on site before unclipping.

Worth knowing

The terrain is hilly and scenic, with two main loops: the 2.7km Ruffey Creek inner path and the longer 3.6km Hill Tops circuit. Shade is patchy on the open hillside and it bakes in summer, so carry water. Snakes turn up in the bushland through the warmer months, so keep dogs close on trail edges and out of long grass, and expect cyclists on the shared paths.

Getting there and parking

The main address is 60 The Boulevarde, Doncaster, with parking also off Victoria Street and Church Road; each entry hub has car parks and public toilets, with accessible facilities at the Victoria Street end. Buses connect from Westfield Doncaster. Parking spreads across several areas, so a full lot at one entrance does not mean the park is full.
