Ruffey Lake Park Dog Off Leash Area

Ruffey Lake Park is the big one for Doncaster dogs: 68 hectares of bushland, hills and a small lake off The Boulevarde, with generous off-leash areas and a walking-trail network. If you want room for an active dog to actually run, this is the pick in the suburb.

The rules. Off-leash applies to the western and southern parts of the park, broadly south of the creek, where dogs can run under effective voice control. The north-eastern zone is on-leash, covering the Victoria Street playground, the Church Road BBQ area and the Quarry Amphitheatre, and dogs must be leashed near the Boulevarde playground and on the paved paths. Dogs are kept out of the fenced picnic and playground areas entirely. Confirm the current boundaries against Manningham Council signage on site, as lead zones do change.

The terrain. The park is hilly and scenic, taking in King Street Hill and Botanic Hill, with two main loops: the 2.7km Ruffey Creek inner path and the longer 3.6km Hill Tops outer path. There is a small lake and patches of shade, but plenty of open hillside that bakes in summer.

What is there. Public toilets with disabled access, drinking water, sheltered picnic areas, scattered benches and tables, and a lookout at Boulevarde Hill. Bins are provided; carry bags and use them.

Getting there. The main address is 60 The Boulevarde, with parking accessible from The Boulevarde, Church Road and Victoria Street. Local buses connect from Westfield Doncaster. Parking spreads across several areas, so a full lot at one entrance does not mean the park is full.

Watch-outs. Snakes turn up in the bushland through the warmer months, so keep dogs close on the trail edges and out of long grass. The shared paths get cyclists, and the hills offer little shade, so carry water on hot days.

When to go. Weekday mornings and early afternoons are quietest; weekends and sunny mornings draw a crowd. If the lower areas are busy, head up to Botanic Hill or the McCallum Road hill for more space. Good for high-energy dogs with solid recall.
