Ted Ajani Reserve is a large community sporting ground on Thompsons Road in Templestowe Lower, and its ovals double as an off-leash area whenever organised sport isn't using them. It's a genuine local favourite, with wide open grass for a proper run.

The rules. Dogs can be off-leash across the ovals 24 hours a day, except when club training or a sporting event is underway, at which point leashes go back on. Keep dogs leashed within 15 metres of the playground and the picnic and barbecue areas. Waste bins are provided, and owners are expected to pick up.

What's there. The reserve has a large car park off Thompsons Road, drinking fountains, shaded seating, and a pavilion with public toilets and picnic tables. Wheelchair-accessible parking is available.

Getting there. Parking is straightforward in the dedicated reserve car park on Thompsons Road. Bus route 903 runs along Thompsons Road for those without a car.

Check the ovals before you let your dog off the lead. The fencing here is mostly low sports rails with gaps, so it's not a secure area for a dog that bolts.

When to go. Early mornings and late afternoons (four to six) draw the local crowd, and weekend mornings are busiest. Winter weekends often see the ovals booked out for football and soccer, cutting into off-leash space, so a weekday visit is the quieter bet.
