Shale Hills Loop

Shale Hills Loop is the sealed walking and cycling track in the southern section of Western Sydney Parklands at West Hoxton, wrapping around one of the region's biggest fenced dog parks. At roughly 3.6 kilometres through Cumberland Plain Woodland, wetland and open grassland, it takes most people 30 to 60 minutes, and the layout makes it the rare trail walk that ends with genuine off-leash time next door.

The walk

The loop circles a central dam, passes the Badu Lookout over the wetland with the Sydney skyline on the horizon, and runs on smooth, well-maintained pavement that handles prams and wheelchairs as happily as paws. Cows graze the flats and kangaroos show up at quieter hours, which keeps a dog's nose busy the whole way round.

Leash status

Dogs are on-leash for the entire loop and in the car park; the only off-leash ground is inside the fenced Shale Hills Dog Park itself, and even there the leash stays on while entering and leaving. Parkland rules cap four dogs per person and require collars with contact tags, and dogs in season or with aggressive histories are excluded.

Pepsi: earn the off-leash half. On-lead round the loop first, then cut them loose in the big fenced park while you take over a picnic shelter.

Water and hazards

There is almost no shade on the loop, so summer walks belong to early morning or evening, and the dam and wetland mean snakes are a warm-month consideration. Water fountains sit near the picnic shelters, but carry a bowl. Watch for cyclists sharing the sealed track, and keep a lead-length clear of the dam edges.

Getting there and parking

The main access is via Second Avenue and Mannow Avenue, with free parking at the dog park car park off Mannow Avenue; street parking is possible near entry points on Moondarra Drive and the numbered avenues. Public transport does not reach the parklands properly, with Liverpool or Edmondson Park stations the nearest, so drive. There are no public toilets on site; the closest are at Carnes Hill Marketplace.
