Shale Hills Loop is the on-leash walking and cycling track that wraps around the Shale Hills off-leash dog park in West Hoxton, part of Western Sydney Parklands. It's a sealed 3.5km loop through wetlands and open grassland, taking roughly 30 to 60 minutes, and it pairs neatly with a stop at the fenced dog park next door for off-leash time.
The rules: Dogs must stay on a leash for the whole loop, on all paths and in the car park. The only off-leash spot in the area is inside the fenced Shale Hills Dog Park itself. Bring your own bags as backup, though bins are provided near the dog park entrance.
The walk: The trail is sealed and easy underfoot, even after rain, but it's mostly exposed with little shade. In summer, an early morning or evening walk is a better bet for your dog than the middle of the day.
Getting there: Access is via Second Ave and Mannow Ave, West Hoxton, with free parking at the dog park entrance. Public transport doesn't reach this far into the parklands easily, the closest train stations are Liverpool or Edmondson Park, so driving is the realistic option.
Nearby with the dogs: There's nothing dog-friendly right on the loop itself, but pet-friendly cafes with outdoor seating turn up a short drive away in Edmondson Park or Liverpool. Confirm at booking if you're chasing accommodation, as pet policies vary and change.
Midweek mornings are quietest if you want the trail to yourself. Weekends draw more foot traffic, mostly from people heading to the dog park itself rather than the loop.
