Shale Hills Fenced Dog Park in West Hoxton is a five-hectare off-leash facility inside Western Sydney Parklands, and one of the largest purpose-built dog parks in the region. The rules: The park is open to walkers 24/7, but the vehicle gate to the car park runs 6am to 6pm (8pm during daylight saving), so plan around that if you're driving. Dogs must be on a leash entering and leaving the fenced off-leash area, and under effective control at all times once inside. Dogs on heat and registered dangerous dogs aren't permitted. Poo bags are supplied, and cleaning up is mandatory.

Getting there: The entrance is at Second Ave and Mannow Ave, West Hoxton, with a free 70-space car park right by the gates. Public transport is limited this far into the parklands, so driving is the practical option.
