Market Garden Swamp Reserve

Paperbark-fringed wetland, ducks and swamphens make Market Garden Swamp Reserve a gentle on-lead loop in Spearwood, on the edge of North Coogee. The paths are paved the whole way, and it stays quiet even at weekends.

Lead rules

The City of Cockburn requires dogs on a lead here. It matters, because the wetland is home to long-necked turtles that come ashore to nest.

The walk

Smooth paved paths circle the swamp and link on to Boodjar Mooliny Lake and Lake Coogee, so you can stretch it into a longer walk. Mature trees and bush give plenty of shade.

Expect birdlife on the water and wildflowers in season.

Max: Keep the lead short near the water's edge. Nesting turtles need the banks left alone.

Before you set off

There is no water for dogs on the loop and no toilets, so bring a bottle and a bowl. Bins are few, mostly at the entry points.

Parking is limited to small informal spots and street bays, such as near Hamilton Road.

Make a day of it

For an off-lead swim afterwards, North Coogee Dog Beach is a popular choice.

Flat, shaded and paved, it suits older dogs and warm days alike.
