Jervoise Bay Dog Beach

Jervoise Bay Dog Beach is the City of Cockburn's designated off-lead beach on the southern side of Woodman Point, a long, calm and shallow stretch of sand where dogs can run and swim at any hour. It is one of the quietest of Perth's off-lead beaches, and the water has barely a wave to fight.

The rules

Dogs are off lead within the designated Jervoise Bay dog beach area but must stay under effective control at all times. The beach is open around the clock, so you are not racing any signage hours.

The boundaries matter here because the council names Woodman Point between the Ammunition Jetty and south around the point to this beach as a dog-prohibited zone. Coogee Beach and its Powell Road reserve, and Ngarkal Beach at Port Coogee Marina, are also strictly dog-free. Stay inside the marked off-lead stretch facing Henderson and keep a lead on hand for the walk in.

Pepsi: Calm water the whole way along means even cautious swimmers get a proper go. Just watch the northern end, the point itself is off limits to dogs.

The water

Expect clear, shallow and protected water with no surf to speak of, which suits puppies, older dogs and anyone who prefers a paddle to a pounding. Kite surfers work the bay on windy days, so give them a wide berth. Seaweed can pile up after storms, and the dry sand narrows at high tide.

What's there

There is parking along the beach frontage, public toilets, showers for sandy paws, bins and council dog waste bag dispensers. Shade is thin, so bring your own, and carry water and a bowl because taps are limited along the sand.

Getting there

Access is via Cockburn Road at the southern end of Coogee, on the edge of Woodman Point Regional Park. Parking is easy close to the access tracks, and bus stops on Cockburn Road leave you a short walk from the sand. Driving is the practical option for most people.

Watch-outs

The main trap is the boundary: the dog-free point starts at the Ammunition Jetty, so check signage rather than following the next dog owner around the corner. Failure to pick up waste carries a $100 penalty in the City of Cockburn, and dispensers do run empty, so pack your own bags as backup.

When to go

Weekend mornings in summer are the busiest stretch. Early mornings and late afternoons stay quieter year round, and weekdays give you the most room if your dog needs space.

Close by with the dogs

The North Coogee dog beach with its wash-down hose is a short drive north, and the Salty Dog Beach Cafe sits beside it. The Woodman Point beach kiosk covers coffee closer to the point, and the Discovery Parks Woodman Point is a pet-friendly base if you are staying over.
