Jervoise Bay Dog Beach sits at the southern end of Cockburn Road in Coogee, running south from Woodman Point to the old ammunition jetty. It's a long, calm, shallow stretch of sand and one of Perth's most reliable off-leash beaches, with clear water and enough room that dogs rarely feel crowded.

The rules. The stretch between the ammunition jetty and Woodman Point is a designated off-leash exercise area, so dogs can run freely here. That freedom stops at the boundary: dogs are not permitted on the adjoining protected beaches, including Ngarkal Beach and the northern part of Coogee Beach, so keep an eye on where the sand changes over. Dogs must stay under control at all times even off-leash.

What's there. Parking is easy right along the beach access points, and there are public toilets plus some shaded seating. The grounds are generally clean and well kept, though a few visitors have noted the bin areas can smell on hot days. Water taps are limited, so bring your own bowl and supply.

Getting there. Access is via Cockburn Road in Coogee, at the southern tip of Woodman Point Regional Park. Parking is plentiful along the beach frontage. The nearest bus stops are on Cockburn Road, a short walk from the sand.

The water. Calm, clear and shallow, which makes it easy for nervous swimmers and puppies as well as confident water dogs. The beach stays usable at high tide, though the dry sand narrows in places.

Nearby with the dogs. The Salty Dog Beach Cafe on Rollinson Road in North Coogee is a five to ten minute drive and welcomes dogs. Several cafes in nearby Fremantle also allow dogs in their outdoor areas, and dog-friendly rentals in Coogee and North Coogee turn up regularly on the usual booking sites.

This is the kind of beach where you can properly stretch your legs. Calm water the whole way along means even cautious swimmers get a go.

When to go. Weekend mornings in summer are the busiest; weekdays or early morning and late afternoon on weekends are quieter. Good for confident and nervous dogs alike, thanks to the flat, calm water.
