What visitors mention
North Coogee Dog Beach, also known locally as C.Y. O'Connor Beach, is a designated off-leash dog exercise area running along Ocean View Parade and Rollinson Road in North Coogee. The draw is simple: a wide, white-sand cove with shallow, clear water that stays sheltered enough for confident swimmers and nervous paddlers alike, with the beach cafe right on the sand for a coffee afterwards.
The rules. Dogs can run off-leash only within the signposted exercise area managed by the City of Cockburn, and must stay under effective voice or signal control at all times. Carry a lead with you even inside the off-leash zone, since council rangers can ask you to use it. Dogs are not permitted on Ngarkal Beach at the Port Coogee Marina or in the main Coogee Beach family swimming area further along, so check the signage before you let your dog off. Pick up and bin waste straight away.
What's there. There is a dog wash shower to rinse sand off after a swim, plus park benches, public toilets and a playground near the beach access points. The Salty Dog Beach Cafe sits right on the sand for coffee, a snack and a water bowl.
Getting there. Drive in via Cockburn Road and turn into Rollinson Road, with parking along Ocean View Parade and in the Rollinson Road carpark. Transperth's 532 and 533 bus routes stop along Cockburn Road near the coastal access points, and the beach also connects to the coastal shared path running up from South Fremantle and down from Port Coogee, so it is an easy add-on for a longer walk or ride.
The water. The cove is relatively protected, so it holds up at most tides, but low to mid-tide opens up the most sand for running and fetch. There is minimal natural shade along this stretch, so bring your own shelter or umbrella if you are staying a while, and expect the sand to get hot by midday in summer.
Nearby with the dogs. The Salty Dog Beach Cafe is the obvious first stop, right on the beach with treats and water for dogs. The Coogee Boathouse in nearby Port Coogee also does dog-friendly alfresco dining if you want to extend the outing.

Go early, before 9am, or late afternoon to dodge the weekend crowds and the worst of the heat. It is a genuinely easy, sheltered swim for most dogs, and a solid pick if you want a beach that does not demand a big hike to get to.
