A flat, sandy off-leash beach with calm, shallow water and a strip of grass behind it, this is a genuine South Freo local hotspot. The draw is gentle water that suits dogs of any swimming ability, with a lawn for fetch when they're done.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash on the beach and in the designated grassed exercise area, which runs between the southern boundaries of Douro Road and Scott Street. They must be on-leash on the surrounding streets and in other public parks. Every dog needs a collar and current registration, and you bin the bags in the bins provided.

The water. Calm whatever the tide, which makes it a good pick for nervous swimmers and puppies rather than dogs chasing surf.

What's there. Outdoor showers to rinse off the sand, public toilets, and large grassy areas for picnics. A coffee cart often runs on the north side near the sailing club.

Getting there. The beach is on Marine Terrace. Parking is close but fills quickly on weekends. By public transport, take the Fremantle train line to Fremantle Station, then a short bus (route 532) and a walk, or just walk down from central Fremantle.

The calm water is the whole point here. Time it for late afternoon and you get an easy swim and the sunset the locals come for.

When to go. Weekday mornings for the most space, late afternoon for the sunset crowd. Good for small dogs and timid swimmers.
