Leighton Beach Dog Exercise Area

Leighton Beach's dog exercise area sits on the northern stretch of the beach, away from the main Surf Life Saving Club patrol zone, with wide white sand and shallow, calm water that makes it one of Fremantle's most popular off-leash runs.

The rules. Dogs can run off-leash on the northern section of Leighton Beach, but must stay under effective voice control. Leads are required in the car park, on the paved walkways, and while crossing from car to sand. The main swimming beach directly in front of the Surf Life Saving Club is off-limits to dogs. Bag dispensers and bins are provided, so pick up after your dog. The area can be temporarily closed to dogs during council-authorised events, so check on-site signage if there is something on.

What's there. Basic showers and change rooms sit near the entrance, along with accessible toilets and bench seating along the foreshore. Fresh water for dogs is generally available near the sand entrance, though it pays to bring your own bowl as a backup. There is little natural shade on the beach itself, so a portable umbrella is worth the extra weight in the car.

Getting there. The beach is reached via Leighton Beach Boulevard and Freeman Loop. Parking is plentiful most of the year but fills quickly on summer mornings and weekends, so aim for the northern end of Leighton Beach Boulevard to land closest to the off-leash section. Leighton train station on the Fremantle line is within walking distance if you would rather skip the car park scramble altogether.

Nearby with the dogs. The Orange Box sits right on the dunes with a dog-friendly outdoor area, good for a coffee straight off the sand. Gage Roads Freo, a short drive away at Victoria Quay, has a large outdoor deck that welcomes dogs. A handful of pet-friendly short-stays and hotels are dotted through North and South Fremantle if you are making a weekend of it.

When to go. Weekday mornings or after 4pm are your best bet for a quieter beach. Summer weekends between 7am and 10am get genuinely packed, and high tide shrinks the usable sand fast, so plan around low tide if you want space to run. Good for confident swimmers and social dogs who do not mind company.
