Leighton Beach Dog Exercise Area

Leighton Beach is one of Perth's most reliable dog runs: two kilometres of white sand with shallow, calm water, and a declared dog exercise area at its northern end where the City of Fremantle meets Mosman Park. It is the crowd-pleaser of the Fremantle dog scene, busy but rarely congested because the sand simply absorbs numbers.

Leash status

Under the City of Fremantle's dog exercise and prohibited areas policy, the declared exercise area runs from the northern district boundary down to a line about 200 metres south of it, between the reserve boundary and the water. That is the off-leash zone; elsewhere on the beach keep your dog on lead. Leads are required in the car park, on the paved paths and while crossing from car to sand, and the area can close temporarily for council-authorised events, so check signage if something is on. Bag dispensers and bins line the foreshore.

Water and terrain

The water shelves gently, which makes this a swimmer's dog beach rather than a surf test, and the sand is wide and clean for fetch and sprint work. There is almost no natural shade on the beach itself, so pack an umbrella for a long summer session and keep an eye on the afternoon sea breeze, which can whip sand up.

Max: aim for the northern end of Leighton Beach Boulevard and you land right in the off-leash strip. Further south and you are walking through on-lead territory to reach it.

Getting there and parking

Access is via Leighton Beach Boulevard and Freeman Loop, with parking that is easy most of the year but fills fast on summer mornings and weekends. Leighton station on the Fremantle line is an easy walk if you would rather skip the car park scramble entirely. Showers, change rooms and accessible toilets sit near the beach entrance, and the grassed foreshore above has BBQs, picnic tables and a kiosk.

When to go

Weekday mornings are quiet; weekend mornings are the social peak and the parking crunch. Sunset is the locals' slot in summer, when the heat is off the sand and the light over Rottnest does its thing.
