The Orange Box

The Orange Box is a casual beach kiosk set on the dunes at Vlamingh Parklands, 14 Leighton Beach Boulevard in North Fremantle - the kind of stop where you order a coffee while the salt is still drying on your dog. It runs out of a converted container with entirely alfresco seating, and dogs are a normal part of the scene rather than a tolerated exception.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating - the umbrellas, the covered patio and the surrounding lawns of the parklands. Staff are relaxed about well-behaved dogs at your feet, and there are water bowls around, though it is worth carrying your own as a backup on busy mornings. Keep your dog leashed at the tables: the sand immediately around the kiosk sits outside the off-leash zone, and council signage at the beach access paths marks where the rules change. This is one of the few cafes where a sandy, damp dog is a completely ordinary sight at the next table.

The food and the hours

The menu covers coffee, smoothies and juices, acai bowls, muffins and casual plates, with fish and chips and fish tacos doing the heavy lifting at lunch. It opens 6:30am to 3pm every day, and there is regular live music on the weekends. Expect queues at peak swim times - the kiosk serves the whole beach, not just dog owners.

The beach out front

The designated off-lead stretch at Leighton Beach Dog Exercise Area is the whole reason this pairing works: a swim and a run on the sand, then breakfast under an umbrella. Dogs stay off the protected dunes and away from the playground, and boundaries shift, so read the signs at the access path. Parking runs along Leighton Beach Boulevard with paid and free bays near the surf club, and the Fremantle line stops at Leighton station a short walk away.
