Broody Hen Coffee Shop

Broody Hen Coffee Shop is a small corner cafe on James Street in Fremantle's arts centre quarter, and it fits the morning-walk rhythm of the suburb perfectly. A handful of footpath tables, solid coffee, and staff who greet the regular dogs by name make this an easy stop on any leashed loop around the heritage streets.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the sidewalk tables on the corner, not inside the little kitchen and dining space. Water bowls come out for visiting pups, and the corner position means a dog can settle out of the flow of foot traffic. The table count is small, so on busy weekend mornings it's first in best dressed for a spot with room to lie down. Carry a backup bowl on hot days anyway.

The vibe

The kitchen is tiny but the output is the drawcard: toasted English muffins, homemade pies, jaffles, frittata and the usual smashed avocado lineup, with pastries from local Freo bakers. Coffee is reliably good and there are plant-based milks on hand. Weekdays run 7am to 2pm, Saturdays to 1pm, and the cafe is closed Sundays. Weekday mornings are the quiet window; the footpath fills quickly after about eight on Saturdays.

Getting there and parking

It sits at 1/13 James Street, a short walk from the Fremantle Arts Centre and the Prison gates end of town. Street parking usually turns up directly out front or one block over, though Freo parking has its own moods, and the free cat bus loop gets you within a couple of blocks if you'd rather park once and walk. Fremantle Station is an easy ten minute walk with the dog.

The heritage streets around the arts centre are pleasant for a post-breakfast wander, and serious dog time is close at hand: South Beach Dog Off Leash Area is a short drive south for a sand and swim session, while East Fremantle Community Park Fenced Dog Park gives a secure run if your dog needs to burn off before settling at a table.
