Yarra City Loop

The Yarra City Loop is a 10.9 kilometre flat circuit along the river through Melbourne's inner north-east, taking in Abbotsford Convent, Dights Falls and the remnant bush around Studley Park. It is graded easy, sealed for most of its length, and takes roughly two to two and a half hours at a steady pace. It is a genuine loop with no backtracking, and the Yarra Bend section reads like open country despite being minutes from the CBD. Dogs walk it on lead, and the reason to bring them is what sits beside the path: several adjoining reserves carry designated off-lead zones you can drop into along the way.

Leash status

Dogs are on lead for the trail itself. Yarra City Council requires leads on shared paths, and Parks Victoria requires them across the wider Yarra Bend ground outside the marked zones, along with a 10 metre lead rule near picnic areas, barbecues and playgrounds. One person can handle no more than four dogs. The designated off-lead areas sit in the adjoining reserves rather than on the path, so the lead goes back on when you rejoin the trail. Dogs are not permitted in the Alphington Park wetlands or in mulched garden beds.

Water and terrain

The surface is sealed or firm gravel and essentially flat, which makes it an easy long walk for most dogs. Drinking fountains with dog bowls are spread along the main sections. Dogs can swim in the river inside the designated off-lead areas under effective control, but the current near Dights Falls is not the place to test that, and water quality drops after heavy rain.

Max: This is a commuter cycling route, not a park path. Cyclists come through fast and quiet at the blind corners near Dights Falls. Short lead, left side, and step off for the bends.

Getting there and parking

Free parking is available at Fairfield Park, at the Dights Falls car park on Trenerry Crescent, and near the Studley Park Boathouse, though all three fill early on weekends. The Hurstbridge line to Fairfield Station leaves a short walk to the trail, which suits anyone pairing the walk with a train trip in.

When to go

Early mornings are the calmest window, before the commuter cyclists and the weekend crowd arrive. After rain, expect puddled sections and murkier river water. The loop works year round thanks to the tree cover through Studley Park.

While you're out there

For a fenced off-lead session before or after, the Fairfield Park Fenced Dog Park sits right by the Fairfield trailhead, and the T H Westfield Reserve Dog Off Leash Area is another designated zone in the same pocket. The Darebin Parklands trail connects in from the Alphington side if you want to extend the walk. The Fairfield Park Boathouse & Tea Gardens by the trailhead is a dog friendly place to finish.
