T H Westfield Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

T H Westfield Reserve is an off-leash area at the northern end of Yarra Bend Park in Fairfield, sitting on open mown grass ringed by mature shade trees just off Yarra Bend Road. The draw is space: a large, gently sloping paddock where dogs can run under voice control, backing onto the Yarra River bushland.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash within the designated area, which is unfenced. Keep your dog on-leash within roughly 5 metres of the picnic shelter, barbecues and car park, and back on-leash on the surrounding Yarra River walking tracks and bushland trails. Effective voice or hand control is required at all times.

What's there. A dedicated car park off Yarra Bend Road, a large picnic shelter, public barbecues, water taps, public toilets near the car park, and bins by the parking area. Bring your own waste bags, as they are not supplied.

Getting there. Drive in via Yarra Bend Road off Heidelberg Road; the paved car park is on the western side of the reserve. Alphington Station on the Hurstbridge line is about a 15 to 20 minute walk. The reserve also connects to the Main Yarra Trail for those arriving on foot or by bike.

Nearby with the dogs. The Fairfield Park Boathouse sits downriver for a coffee by the water, and Hoppa and Joe on Heidelberg Road is a short trip out for a dog-friendly brunch.

When to go. Weekends and sunny weekday mornings and evenings are the social peak. For a calmer run, especially with a reactive or nervous dog, aim for a weekday afternoon.
