Fairfield Park Boathouse & Tea Gardens

Fairfield Park Boathouse & Tea Gardens is a heritage cafe on the banks of the Yarra River at the end of Fairfield Park Drive, about 7 km from the CBD. It has been a local gathering spot since 1908, and the reason to bring the dog is the setting: terraced garden and deck seating over the river, at the mouth of a network of dog-friendly walking trails.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome across all the outdoor and terraced garden seating areas, but not inside the heritage boathouse building. Keep your dog on-leash at all times on-site. Water bowls are usually out around the outdoor seating, handy after a riverside walk.

Good to know. It runs breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, with Devonshire tea and scones a mainstay, and the deck is the seat to angle for. Wooden rowboats, canoes and kayaks are available for hire when river conditions allow. Reviews consistently flag the river outlook rather than the food as the headline, so come for the setting and a coffee.

Getting there and parking. Parking is the catch. There is very limited free 4-hour and disabled parking at the top of Fairfield Park Drive off Heidelberg Road, plus a handful of 1-hour bays near the Heidelberg Road entrance. On weekends and public holidays, use the 150-plus free unlimited spaces at the Melbourne Polytechnic car park, entering via Yarra Bend Road. Fairfield Station on the Hurstbridge line is a 10 to 15 minute walk down to the river.

Nearby with the dogs. The boathouse is the gateway to T H Westfield Reserve and the wider Yarra Bend Park trails, including the pipe bridge loop and the Dights Falls circuit. Dogs are allowed off-leash on the unfenced sporting grounds within Fairfield Park when they are not booked for sport.

When to go. Weekends and fine afternoons draw big crowds and squeeze the limited parking. A weekday morning or midweek afternoon is calmer, cooler for the walk, and far easier to park.
