What visitors mention
The off-leash area inside Darebin Parklands is the reason so many local dogs know this 33-hectare bushland reserve by heart. It sits in the open, grassy section near Darebin Creek, where dogs can run under voice control and cool off in the creek, all a short walk from the Alphington and Fairfield ends of the park.
The rules. Off-leash is only permitted in the designated area near the creek; dogs must be on-lead in the car park, at the main entrances and on the shared paths, including within a few metres of them. Dogs may enter the creek in the off-lead area only. This is a genuine wildlife reserve with nesting birds, echidnas and more, so effective voice control matters here more than at a suburban paddock. Fines apply for dogs off-lead in on-lead zones. Carry bags and use the bins provided.
What's there. The off-leash section is a large open grassy space with treed edges and direct creek access, which is the main attraction on a warm day. Benches sit within the area, and there are drinking fountains, dog waste bins and toilets across the wider parklands, though water inside the off-leash zone itself is limited.
Getting there. There is a car park near the main entrance off Separation Street, plus access from the Yarana Road end. Alphington Station on the Mernda line is roughly a 10 to 15 minute walk. The parklands also connect directly to the Darebin Creek Trail for walkers and cyclists.

Watch-outs. The creek banks and lower paths turn muddy after rain, so bring a towel. Keep dogs off the revegetated creek banks and away from wildlife.
When to go. Weekday mornings, particularly Tuesday to Thursday, are the quietest; weekends and sunny afternoons draw a crowd around the main paddock. Good for confident dogs with reliable recall who enjoy a creek swim.
