Malahang Reserve Fenced Dog Park

Malahang Reserve Fenced Dog Park sits on the corner of Oriel Road and Southern Road in Heidelberg West, and it is one of the few fully fenced off-leash enclosures in Banyule. For dogs that bolt at open gates, this is the safer pick in the council area.

The dog setup

The enclosure is fully fenced with a double-gated entry, so you can transition off-lead without the escape risk. Inside there is room for a proper sprint, mature trees for shade, log tunnels and other simple enrichment for the sniffers, and benches for the humans.

Banyule's dog rules apply: off-lead is fine inside the fenced area under effective control, dogs stay on lead on shared paths and within five metres of them, and keep five metres clear of the playground and BBQ areas. Council officers can fine handlers up to $600 for not carrying bags or not cleaning up, so bring your own as backup.

Max: this is a long, narrow run rather than a square paddock. Ball dogs get the most out of it, because there is real distance for a fetch down the fence line while the meanderers work the trees.

Weekday mornings tend to be the quiet stretch, with the after-work window and weekend middays the busiest. First visits go better in the calm hours if your dog is still building confidence around groups.

Water and waste

There are drinking fountains with dog bowls in the reserve, and bag dispensers with bins for waste. On busy weekends the bins can fill fast, so carry a spare bag out with you rather than assuming there is capacity left.

Getting there and parking

The reserve is at the Oriel Road and Southern Road corner in Heidelberg West, open around the clock, with a car park at the reserve that generally has space. Local buses run along Oriel Road if you are coming without a car.

Close by with the dogs

The Darebin Creek Trail starts nearby for an on-lead warm-up or a longer outing, and Birdie Coffee Bar and Mick's at Sweet by Nature are the closest coffee options in the suburb.
