Malahang Reserve Fenced Dog Park sits on the corner of Oriel Road and Southern Road in Heidelberg West, a fully fenced off-leash reserve with double-gate entry, so it is one of the safer bets in Banyule for dogs that bolt at open gates.

The rules. Inside the fence your dog can run off-leash under effective control. Keep dogs on-lead on the shared footpaths and on the walk to and from the car, and stay at least 15 metres clear of the playground and BBQ area. Dogs must go back on-lead if a sporting or public event is using the reserve. Pick up after your dog, carry your own bags, and note that Banyule council fines for not doing so run up to $600.

What's there. The park has two water fountains, benches for owners, log tunnels and trees dogs can use for shade and stimulation, and bins for waste, though on busy days those bins can fill up fast so it is worth carrying a spare bag out with you.

Getting there. There is a car park at the reserve with generally enough space, and local bus routes run along Oriel Road if you are coming without a car.

Nearby with the dogs. Crate Specialty Coffee in nearby Heidelberg Heights has a relaxed, dog-friendly reputation, and Cafe Matto in Heidelberg is a solid option for outdoor dining afterwards.

the fenced area feels small when it is busy, so if your dog gets overwhelmed around boisterous playmates, aim for a quieter window rather than a Saturday afternoon.

Weekday mornings and early afternoons are the quietest times to visit. Weekends and weekday evenings after 5pm draw a crowd, and the ground can turn muddy for a day or two after heavy rain, so plan for a hose-down before you get back in the car.
