Mick's at Sweet by Nature

Mick's at Sweet by Nature is a small independent cafe at 131-133 Bamfield Road, Heidelberg West, run from the same site as the Sweet by Nature wholesale bakery. That pairing sets the agenda: proper specialty coffee out front, and a cabinet loaded with cakes, slices and pastries made a few metres away. The draw is the bakery connection: the caramel slice in particular has a following, alongside tarts, pastries and a breakfast and brunch menu with rolls and flat whites. There are vegetarian and vegan options, chilli scrambled eggs among the hot dishes, and an Italian-style pantry section selling imported specialty goods, so it doubles as a shop run. Families get a kids corner with toys and books, and there is wheelchair-accessible entry and seating. Hours run 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 2pm Saturday, and the cafe is closed Sundays, so weekend trips need to be Saturday ones.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits in the Heidelberg West business park area, with on-site and street parking usually available close by. By public transport, Heidelberg station on the Hurstbridge line connects to local buses running down towards Bamfield Road. Weekday mornings are the easiest window for an outdoor table, and the early afternoon close means this is a breakfast and lunch venue rather than an afternoon one.

Malahang Reserve Fenced Dog Park is close by in Heidelberg West if your dog needs a proper off-lead run before or after coffee, and the Darebin Creek Trail starts from the same suburb for a longer on-lead walk.
