G.H. Mott Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

G.H. Mott Reserve is a social, open off-leash area in central Preston, just off Bell Street. It is a casual neighbourhood spot used heavily by locals, and the main thing to know up front is that it is not fenced and sits close to a busy road.

The rules. Dogs may be off-leash under effective voice control. They must be on-leash, or out of the way, when organised sport or training is on, and kept clear of the playground (a 15-metre buffer applies). Carry a leash, and pick up after your dog. Standard Darebin off-leash conditions apply.

What's there. Open grass, a drinking fountain with a dog bowl, park benches and paved paths. Lighting is minimal, so it is not ideal after dark. The ground turns muddy after rain, so a towel earns its place in winter.

Getting there. Limited on-street parking on nearby streets such as Patterson Street. Preston station (Mernda line) is roughly a 15 to 20 minute walk, and the 11 tram runs down St Georges Road nearby.

When to go. Busiest weekday evenings (around 5 to 7pm) and weekend mornings, which suits social dogs but can overwhelm a nervous one. Mid-week and middle of the day are calmer.
