A.H Capp Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

A.H. Capp Reserve on Halwyn Crescent is one of Preston's better-equipped off-leash options: a large unfenced grassed oval sitting beside the Merri Creek trail, with shelters, barbecues and an outdoor gym on the fringe. It is an active multi-use reserve, which shapes the one rule that matters most: off-leash is open 24 hours except when organised sport is on.

The dog setup

The oval is the off-leash area, and it is completely unfenced, so dogs need reliable recall with the creek trail and open paths right there. Darebin's rules apply: dogs off-lead under effective voice control, on-lead within 10 metres of the playground, shared paths and barbecues when in use, and leashed before entering and leaving the zone. Carry a lead at all times and pick up after your dog; bring your own bags, because dispensers are not always stocked. Remove your dog promptly if it shows aggression or fear.

When cricket or soccer is in progress the oval comes back on-lead, and the grounds are used enough that you should expect to share, especially weekend mornings. The upside of the sporting use is the facility list: a drinking fountain with a dog bowl, a large shelter with picnic tables and barbecues, an outdoor gym, bins, and a playground to steer dogs clear of.

Pepsi: the water tap with the bowl is by the oval, but on hot afternoons it gets a queue. Bring a backup bottle anyway.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits on Halwyn Crescent with street parking on the surrounding residential streets. It is an easy walk from the Merri Creek trail, so cyclists and creek walkers cut through regularly, which is exactly why the path buffers matter. Preston station is within walking distance for a car-free visit.

Worth knowing

This is a social oval where the regulars know each other, and it copes well with high-energy dogs precisely because the space is big and open. The two things to watch are sport on the ground (check before you unsnap the lead) and the open boundary toward the trail, which is no place for a dog that bolts.
