W.R. Ruthven V.C. Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

W.R. Ruthven V.C. Reserve on Malpas Street in Preston is a flat, open suburban park built around a large grassed oval. It is a straightforward spot for an active dog that wants room to run or chase a ball, and the off-leash area is available 24 hours except during organised sport.

The rules. Dogs may be off-leash under voice control at all times, except when organised sport or training is on. The reserve is only partly fenced by sports perimeter rails, and gates may not be secure, so do not treat it as a contained area. Keep dogs on-lead within 10 metres of playgrounds and shared paths. Carry a leash and pick up after your dog. No dogs that are on heat or aggressive.

What's there. Large open grass, sports fields, gym areas within the reserve, open seating and some evening lighting.

Getting there. Easy street parking on Malpas Street and Donald Street. Keon Park station (Mernda line) is roughly a 10 to 15 minute walk, and local streets are bike-friendly.

When to go. Busiest mornings (around 7 to 9am) and evenings (around 4 to 6pm), plus Saturday mornings. Middle of the day on a weekday is calmest for a quieter dog.
