Darebin Parklands

Darebin Parklands is a large tract of native bushland along Darebin Creek in Alphington, often described as the bush in the heart of the city. For dog walkers it delivers kilometres of gravel and paved tracks, creek rambles and a genuine sense of nature within a short train ride of the CBD, plus a designated off-leash zone for a proper run.

The walk. Expect a network of gravel and sealed walking tracks winding through revegetated creek banks and open bushland, with loop options and a direct connection to the Darebin Creek Trail if you want to extend the distance towards Fairfield, Kew East or Bundoora. The terrain is gently undulating, with some uneven gravel underfoot, so it rewards steady walkers rather than being a flat stroll.

Leash status. Dogs must be on-lead on the shared paths, in car parks and at the entrances, and within a few metres of shared paths. Off-lead is permitted only in the designated area near the creek, where dogs may also enter the water. This is an active wildlife reserve, home to echidnas, flying foxes, native fish and around 70 bird species, so keep your dog under close control near nesting birds and the creek banks, and off the revegetated edges. Fines apply for dogs off-lead in on-lead zones.

Water. Darebin Creek runs through the park and dogs can access it in the off-lead area only. Drinking fountains with bowls are near the main pathways, and there are dog waste bins throughout.

Getting there. There are car parks at the Separation Street and Yarana Road entrances. Alphington Station on the Mernda line is roughly a 10 to 15 minute walk, and buses run along Grange Road. The Darebin Creek Trail links straight in for walkers and cyclists.

Nearby with the dogs. The cafe strips near Alphington and Fairfield stations have outdoor seating for a post-walk coffee. Confirm dog policies before settling in.

When to go. Tuesday to Thursday mornings are the quietest; weekends and sunny afternoons, especially Sunday, are busy around the main off-leash paddock. Early morning and late afternoon are best for birdlife. Good for owners who want a longer bushland walk with a creek and a dedicated off-leash finish.
