Darebin Parklands

Darebin Parklands is a large tract of native bushland along Darebin Creek in Alphington, often described as the bush in the heart of the city. For dog walkers it delivers kilometres of gravel and paved tracks, creek rambles and a designated off-leash zone, all within a short train ride of the CBD.

The walk

Expect a network of gravel and sealed walking tracks winding through revegetated creek banks and open bushland, with loop options and a direct connection to the Darebin Creek Trail if you want to extend towards Fairfield, Kew East or Bundoora. The terrain is gently undulating with some uneven gravel underfoot, so it rewards steady walkers rather than being a flat stroll.

Leash status

Dogs must be on-lead on the shared paths, in car parks, at the entrances and within five metres of shared paths. Off-lead is permitted only in the designated area near the creek in the park's north-east corner, where dogs may also enter the water.

This is an active wildlife reserve, home to echidnas, flying foxes and around 70 bird species, so keep your dog under close control near nesting birds and the creek banks, and off the revegetated edges. Fines apply for dogs off-lead in on-lead zones.

Water

Darebin Creek runs through the park and dogs can access it in the off-lead area only, which includes a popular swimming hole. Drinking fountains with bowls are near the main pathways, and there are dog waste bins throughout.

Watch-outs

Max: the tracks near the creek get slippery and muddy after rain, and snakes are active in the warmer months in this kind of bushland. Stick to the firmer main paths in wet weather and keep your dog leashed and close on the narrow creek-side sections.

Getting there

The main entrance is at the east end of Separation Street, with a shelter, toilets and water taps, and there are car parks at the Separation Street and Yarana Road entrances. Alphington Station on the Mernda line is roughly a 10 to 15 minute walk, and buses run along Grange Road. The Darebin Creek Trail links straight in for walkers and cyclists.
