Emerald Lakes Circuit

The Emerald Lakes Circuit is a flat loop on sealed path around the lakes at Carrara, behind the Emerald Lakes village on the Gold Coast. Dogs are welcome on lead and the surface never changes, which makes this one of the easiest long walks on the coast for an old dog, a recovering one, or anyone pushing a pram alongside.

The walk

Around 6 km, graded easy, a bit over an hour at a steady pace. It is paved and level the whole way, tracing the water past the village buildings and fountains before running out along the boardwalk into the wetlands section. There is no climbing anywhere on it, and you can cut the loop short at several points where the path meets the road. Note that the circuit wraps a private golf course and residential community, so stick to the public council path and do not wander onto the greens.

Leash status

On lead at all times around the circuit under City of Gold Coast rules, unless you are standing inside a signed designated off-leash area. There is a signed off-leash zone within the wider parklands, so check the council's dog exercise area map for current boundaries before you unclip. Dogs are prohibited from the children's playground areas, including the fully fenced all-abilities playground in the parklands, and the council warns that tough penalties apply. Carry bags and bin the waste; fines apply here as they do across the city.

Worth knowing

The whole circuit is concrete, and Gold Coast concrete in summer will burn pads. Press the back of your hand flat on the path for five seconds before you set off. If you cannot hold it there, neither can the dog.

Max: six kilometres of lake views and not one patch of grass worth rolling in until the wetlands end. Worth it, but I earned my dinner.

Water and terrain

A drinking fountain and water tap sit in the parklands, along with picnic shelters, tables and barbecues. Tree cover is patchy: decent along parts of the lake edge and thin elsewhere, so summer mornings beat middays. The parklands get quite wet after heavy rain, so stay on the raised concrete when they do. The lake itself is not a swimming option, and the shared path carries joggers and cyclists as well as dog walkers, which is one more reason to keep the lead short on the narrow sections.

Getting there and parking

The parklands sit on Lakeside Drive, Carrara, entered at the intersection of Birmingham Road and Emerald Lakes Drive. Parking bays run along Emerald Lakes Drive and near the walking paths, free but busy close to the village, particularly on weekend mornings when the cafes are pumping.

When to go

Early is the answer for most of the year. The path is shaded in only a few stretches, and a sunny Gold Coast afternoon turns the concrete into a pad risk even in shoulder seasons. Winter is the sweet season for a full lap, with mild sun and the fountains catching the low light over the water.

Close by with the dogs

Pooches & Pastries in Carrara is a dedicated dog cafe and an obvious finish to the walk, with Local Joe Cafe as a second option. For an off-lead run after the on-lead loop, the fenced enclosures at Robina Common and Pizzey Park are both short drives away.
