Cabana Offleash Dog Area

Cabana Offleash Dog Area is a large, unfenced off-leash space at the end of Cabana Boulevard in Benowa, running along the Nerang River beside the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens. The combination is the draw: a big open grass field plus a shallow, sandy river spot where dogs can swim, open around the clock.

The dog setup

Dogs are off-leash within the marked area but must stay under effective control at all times, and there are no separate zones for small and large dogs. The space is not fully fenced, spanning several open hectares bordered in parts by water, so solid recall matters before you unclip. Dogs go back on lead in the rest of the botanic gardens, around the feature lakes and near the playgrounds. Bag dispensers and bins sit at the entry points.

Worth knowing

The swim spot sits on the Nerang River, so it is tidal: high tide gives cleaner, deeper water for a proper dip, while low tide exposes more mud along the bank. Check the tide before you go if swimming is the plan. On site there is a drinking fountain with a built-in dog bowl, benches in shaded spots, and sealed, wheelchair-accessible paths through the park.

Max: no fence and a river boundary means recall is doing all the work here. If your dog's recall is shaky, keep them on a long line near the water until you trust it.

Getting there and parking

Drive in via Cabana Boulevard; parking is free street parking near the end of the road, then a short walk. Alternatively, park near the botanic gardens playground and stroll the path, with the off-leash entrance on your left. Buses along Benowa Road leave a walk to Cabana Boulevard.
