The lead. Cabana Offleash Dog Area is a large, unfenced off-leash space at the end of Cabana Boulevard in Benowa, running along the Nerang River beside the Gold Coast Botanic Gardens. The draw is the combination: a big open grass field plus a shallow, sandy river spot where dogs can swim. It is open 24/7.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash within the marked area but must stay under effective control at all times. The space is not fully fenced, so solid recall matters, especially near the water and the boundaries. There are no separate zones for small and large dogs. Clean up after your dog; bag stations and bins are provided at the entry points.

The water. The swim spot is on the Nerang River, so it is tidal. High tide gives cleaner, deeper water for a proper dip; low tide can expose more mud along the bank. Check the tide before you go if your dog likes to swim.

No fence and a river boundary means recall is doing all the work here. If your dog's recall is shaky, keep them on a long line near the water until you trust it.

What's there. A drinking fountain with a built-in dog bowl, several benches in shaded spots, sealed walking paths through the park, and wheelchair-accessible parking and paths.

Getting there. Drive in via Cabana Boulevard; parking is limited on-street near the end of the road, then a short walk to the area. You can also park near the Botanic Gardens playground and stroll along the path, with the entrance on your left. Nearest buses run along Benowa Road, then a walk to Cabana Boulevard.

Nearby with the dogs. Double Barrel Kitchen and Bar at The Concourse is a short drive for a lakeside brunch with dogs welcome in the outdoor area. Benowa Gardens Shopping Centre and Ashmore Road have further dog-friendly cafe options.

When to go. Sunday mornings are busiest. Weekday mornings and evenings, plus Saturday nights, are quieter. Aim for high tide if swimming is the plan. Good for confident, water-loving dogs with reliable recall.
