Elwood Park via Bay Trail

This 5 km stretch of the Bay Trail runs along Ormond Esplanade from Elwood Park towards Brighton, flat and paved the whole way with Port Phillip Bay on one side. It is one of the easiest long walks in Melbourne's bayside suburbs: no climbing, a wide sealed surface, and unbroken water views. The path itself is on-lead at all times; the sand beside it plays by a different rule that changes with the season.

The dog setup

The City of Port Phillip manages this section and dogs must be on-lead on the paved Bay Trail at all times, including through Elwood Park. The adjacent Elwood foreshore has designated off-leash areas, but the boundaries are marked on signs at the beach access points rather than being uniform along the sand, so read them on the day. Port Phillip has been consulting on changes to its dog restrictions, which makes the current signage even more important to check.

Leash status

On-lead everywhere on the path. On the Elwood Beach sand between the rock groynes, dogs are allowed freely from 1 April to 31 October, but in summer (1 November to 31 March) only outside the daylight beach hours, roughly 7:30pm to 10am. Dogs stay clear of playgrounds, and the Brighton beaches further south sit under Bayside Council with their own separate rules.

Water and terrain

Drinking fountains with low, wide dog bowls are spaced along the trail, waste bins sit along the foreshore, and public toilets are near the Elwood Life Saving Club. Shaded picnic areas and barbecues sit back from the path. The surface is entirely flat sealed shared path, about an hour at walking pace for the full 5 km, and suitable for strollers and older dogs alike.

Hazards

Cyclists, mostly. This is a commuter and weekend riding route and the fast traffic comes past close, so a short lead on your bay side keeps everyone honest. The other one is exposure: there is almost no shade between the Esplanade car parks, the whole stretch is open to the bay, and the wind can be genuinely cold even on a mild day. Hot afternoons are the other extreme, so carry water even with fountains on route.

Getting there and parking

Ticketed parking runs along Ormond Esplanade with free two-hour spots on the side streets behind it, and both fill early on sunny weekends. By train, Elsternwick or Gardenvale on the Sandringham line leave you a walk or short bus ride from the water. The easiest access points are Point Ormond Lookout and any of the Esplanade beach car parks.

While you're out there

Plain Sailing on Ormond Road is the standard post-walk stop and The Little Ox covers the Brighton end. When the beach times do not suit, Clarke Reserve is the off-lead alternative, and Brighton Beach Gardens via Bay Trail continues the same path south. If you are making a weekend of it, Quest Brighton on the Bay takes dogs.

When to go
