Brighton Beach Gardens via Bay Trail

Brighton Beach Gardens via Bay Trail is an 8.2 km out-and-back walk along the paved foreshore path linking Elwood to Brighton, VIC, taking in bay views, the city skyline and the historic Brighton bathing boxes. The deciding fact for dog owners: this is an on-lead trail from end to end, and there is a strict seasonal ban on dogs at nearby beaches during daylight hours in summer.

The walk. Allow around 1.5 to 2 hours (roughly 102 minutes) for the full 8.2 km return trip. The surface is flat, paved and shared with joggers and cyclists the whole way, so the moderate difficulty rating comes purely from the distance rather than any climbing. It runs from Elwood Beach and Point Ormond, past Green Point, to the Brighton Beach Bathing Boxes and Brighton Beach Gardens, then back the same way.

The rules. Bayside City Council (Brighton) and City of Port Phillip (Elwood) require dogs to stay on lead at all times on the Bay Trail path and through Brighton Beach Gardens, and within 20 m of any playground. Just as important: from 1 November to 31 March, dogs are banned from most Bayside beaches between 10am and 7.30pm outside designated off-leash zones. This trail itself is a path walk, not a beach walk, but if you plan to let your dog cool off in the bay along the way, check the season and the zone first.

Water. Dog-friendly water fountains are dotted along the trail, and Green Point, near the Cenotaph, makes a good rest stop with benches and an outlook partway along.

Getting there. Free parking runs along Ormond Esplanade near Point Ormond in Elwood, plus paid parking at Green Point or near the Brighton Life Saving Club (watch expiry times). By public transport, take the Sandringham line train to Middle Brighton Station, or tram route 67 to Elwood on Glenhuntly Road for a short walk to the trail.

Nearby with the dogs. For an off-leash run before or after this on-lead walk, try Clarke Reserve Off-Leash Park or the fully fenced M.O. Moran Reserve Fenced Dog Park. Afterwards, Plain Sailing in Elwood makes a solid coffee stop. If 8.2 km feels short, the Bay Trail: Elwood to Sandringham extends the same path further south.

When to go. Weekday mornings before 9am are quietest and safest around bike traffic; weekends and summer afternoons get busy with cyclists, so keep the lead short. Good for relaxed walkers and seniors after a flat, scenic stretch, less ideal for big runners wanting an off-leash sprint.
