Brighton Beach Gardens via Bay Trail

The Bay Trail between Elwood and Brighton is one of Melbourne's most reliable flat walks: 8.2 km out-and-back along the paved foreshore path, taking in bay views, the city skyline and the historic Brighton bathing boxes at the far end. Allow an hour and a half to two hours for the full return. The surface never leaves the pavement, so the moderate rating comes from distance alone rather than any climbing.

Leash status

On-lead from end to end, and the rule is enforced across two councils. City of Port Phillip covers the Elwood end and Bayside City Council covers Brighton, and both require dogs leashed at all times on shared paths and foreshore reserves, with rangers patrolling year round. Dogs must also stay leashed within 20 m of any playground. The beach rules are a separate calculation: from 1 November to 31 March, dogs are banned from most Bayside beaches between 10am and 7.30pm, and Port Phillip applies its own summer time-and-zone limits on the sand at Elwood. Winter is more generous, with off-leash sand under effective control at both ends. Check signage at whichever beach you plan to use, because the zones are specific and the fines are not theoretical.

The path itself is shared with joggers and cyclists the whole way, and summer weekend afternoons get genuinely busy, so keep the lead short and walk single file near the bike traffic. Green Point, near the Cenotaph, is the natural mid-walk rest stop with benches and an outlook over the marina.

Dog-friendly water fountains are dotted along the trail, so you can travel light, though carrying a bowl never hurts on a warm day.

Getting there and parking

Free parking runs along Ormond Esplanade near Point Ormond at the Elwood end, with paid parking at Green Point and near the Brighton Life Saving Club, where expiry times are enforced. On public transport, the Sandringham line to Middle Brighton station puts you near the bathing boxes, while tram route 67 along Glenhuntly Road leaves a short walk to the Elwood trailhead.

Since this walk is on-lead throughout, an off-leash session before or after rounds it out nicely: Clarke Reserve Off-Leash Park or the fully fenced M.O. Moran Reserve Fenced Dog Park are both close to the Elwood trailhead, and Sandown Street Beach near the Brighton border is the famous year-round dog beach on this stretch. Plain Sailing on the Elwood foreshore handles the coffee stop.

When to go

Weekday mornings before 9am are quietest and safest around bike traffic. On hot summer days go early regardless, both for the dog's sake and because the midday beach curfew starts at 10am. The walk works in every season, but the skyline is at its best early and the bathing boxes photograph best with morning light behind you.
