Canungra Showgrounds and Camping

Canungra Showgrounds and Camping is a creekside campground on Coburg Road, an easy walk from the centre of Canungra in the Gold Coast hinterland. Dogs are welcome overnight with the caretaker's approval, which makes it a practical base for a Scenic Rim trip that includes the dog.

The dog setup

Admittance is at the caretaker's sole discretion, so flag your dog when you arrive and ideally before you book. The published policy requires all dogs on leads at all times, bans pets from the amenities blocks and other buildings, and leaves owners responsible for their dog's welfare and for cleaning up droppings. No pet fee or size limit is stated, so confirm both when you contact the caretaker.

Sites are powered or unpowered with creek frontage, and the policy applies equally to tents, camper trailers, caravans and big rigs. There are no cabins, so this is proper camping with a dog alongside.

The vibe

Facilities are simple but cover the essentials: flush toilets, coin operated hot showers, a communal camp kitchen and an undercover BBQ area. The creek beside the grounds is the drawcard, with a popular swimming hole for cooling off, and fire pits for the evenings. Fees generally sit around $35 to $40 a night depending on site type and guest numbers, paid in advance, with a maximum stay of about 14 days.

Getting there

The showgrounds sit on the edge of town, roughly 15 minutes from Nerang and under an hour from the Gold Coast via Beaudesert Nerang Road. Town is close enough to walk, so cafés and the pub are within reach with the dog on lead.

While you are out there

Start the morning at Cafe Metz or Giddyup Gelato, then let the dog run at the Canungra Dog Park before dinner at the Canungra Hotel beer garden. If the grounds are full, Canungra Sports and Recreation Ground is the other pet friendly option in town.
