Leash-Free Dog Area

What it is. This is the fenced off-leash dog area on Central Avenue, near the corner of Southport Avenue, in the middle of Tamborine Mountain township. It is run by Scenic Rim Regional Council and it is the go-to spot on the mountain for letting the dog off the lead without traffic to worry about. A grassy, tree-shaded enclosure that suits small and medium dogs and quick exercise breaks best.

The rules. Dogs run off-leash inside the fence only. Leash on for entering and exiting, and off once you are through the gate. Keep gates closed at all times, stay inside the enclosure with your dog, and keep them under effective voice control. Pick up after your dog and bring your own bags. Dogs that are unwell or known to be aggressive should stay home.

What is there. A fully fenced, grassed area separated from the road, with drinking water available and some basic bench seating. There is a small children's playground next door and public toilets in the vicinity. Entry is wheelchair-accessible. It is a compact council park rather than a sprawling dog park, so set expectations for a solid stretch of the legs rather than a marathon.

Getting there. Central Avenue at the Southport Avenue intersection, a short walk from the main township. Best reached by car; regional buses run through the mountain but do not drop you at the gate. There is accessible parking nearby.

Nearby with the dog. You are surrounded by dog-friendly cafes here. At The Avenue Coffee & More is right around the corner on Southport Avenue, and Tamborine Mountain Coffee Plantation and Tamborine Beer Garden are both a short drive for a feed afterwards. Note that the surrounding Tamborine National Park sections do not allow dogs, so keep walks to the council parks and streets.

When to go. Weekday mornings, Tuesday to Thursday, are the quietest. Sunday all day and Friday and Monday afternoons are the busiest, so a timid dog is better off on an early weekday visit. Bring water in warmer months even though there is a tap, and go early to beat the heat on the exposed grass.
