Canungra Sports and Recreation Ground

The Canungra Sports and Recreation Ground doubles as the Canungra Showgrounds camping area, a creekside campground on the edge of town in the Scenic Rim. Unlike most sports grounds, it takes dogs overnight, which makes it a genuinely practical base for a hinterland trip with your dog.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome to stay, but admittance is at the caretaker's discretion, so flag your dog when you arrive. The rules are strict and simple: leads at all times on the grounds, no pets inside the amenities blocks or any buildings, and owners are liable for their dogs and their droppings. There is no stated size limit or pet fee, but confirm both when booking.

The ground itself is grassed camping space with unpowered sites, a camp kitchen and clean amenities, and several sites sit near the creek. There is no off-leash area inside the property, so your dog stays on lead even at your site.

Worth knowing

The creek alongside the ground has a popular swimming hole for cooling off, and dogs can walk the banks with you on lead. The town centre is an easy walk, which is rare for a campground with this much open space.

Show days and long weekends are the busy spells, so site choice matters then; on quiet midweek nights you will hear the creek more than the neighbours. Grounds are grassed and mostly level, suiting tents and camper trailers alike.

Getting there

The grounds sit just off the Beenleigh-Beaudesert Road approach to Canungra QLD 4275, within walking distance of the town's shops and cafes. Parking is on the grounds next to your site.

While you're out there

For proper off-leash running, the Canungra Dog Park on Coburg Road is a short walk away and fully fenced. In town, Cafe Metz, Giddyup Gelato Cafe and the beer garden at the Canungra Hotel all take dogs at outdoor tables.
