Cafe Metz

Cafe Metz is the family-owned country cafe on Christie Street, the main drag through Canungra, and it has been feeding Scenic Rim travellers since 2016. Dogs are welcome on the outdoor verandah, which makes it a natural first or last stop on a day heading towards Lamington National Park or the vineyards out of town.

The dog setup

Dogs sit with you on the wraparound outdoor verandah, where there is shade for most of the day and room to tuck a lead back from the footpath traffic. Staff are used to dogs passing through and will usually bring out a water bowl if you ask. It is a people-watching kind of deck rather than a run-around space, so keep your dog settled at the table while you eat.

Coffee, cake and the all-day menu

The coffee is Merlo, and the kitchen runs all-day breakfast plus hearty lunches: big breakfasts, the steak sandwich regulars order on repeat, burgers, and a loaded cabinet of house-baked cakes, pies and scones. There is a licensed drinks list for a slower lunch, and vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options across the menu. Hours run from 5:30am on weekdays to mid-afternoon, with Friday dinner service to 9pm, and weekends fill up fast with the motorbike and touring crowd, so a weekday morning gets you a calm table.

Getting there and parking

You will find it at 37 Christie Street in central Canungra, roughly 40 minutes from the Gold Coast via Beaudesert-Beenleigh Road. Street parking runs along the main strip and a public car park sits behind the shops if the front is full. Canungra Creek and the town's open green space are an easy stroll away for a leg-stretch before the drive on.

Close by with the dogs

The Canungra Dog Park is the local off-lead option a couple of minutes away, and Giddyup Gelato Cafe on the same street is a good second stop for the kids and the dog. The Canungra Hotel covers a sit-down lunch in town, and the Tamborine Mountain leash-free area is a short drive up the hill if you are looping the Scenic Rim.
