Diversion Weir Dog Off Leash Area

Diversion Weir is a large, open off-leash area running along the Werribee River, roughly 600 metres long by 150 wide, and the draw is the sheer room to sprint. It is unfenced and sits right by the water, so it suits dogs with reliable recall rather than bolters.

The rules. This is an off-leash reserve, but keep your dog on the lead entering and exiting and on the adjacent shared path. Effective voice control is required throughout: your dog must stay in sight and come back when called. Dogs must not enter the river or harass wildlife, must carry a current registration tag, and you must pick up after them.

The terrain. Open grassy field bordered by native woodland, very exposed to sun and wind with limited shade. Watch for bindi thorns in the grass, which lodge in paws and shoes.

What's there. Not much by way of facilities. There are no water taps or bins inside the field itself, so bring your own water and bags. Access is via suburban streets.

Getting there. Reach it from Redgum Close, John Ball Place or De Garis Place, with street parking at each. Werribee Station is the nearest train, then a short rideshare. You can also arrive on foot or by bike along the Werribee River Trail.

When to go. Popular on weekend mornings and weekday late afternoons but rarely crowded given the size. Mid-week mid-morning is quietest. Bring water in summer, as there is no relief from the sun.
