Diversion Weir Dog Off Leash Area

The Diversion Weir Dog Off Leash Area is a long, open stretch of riverfront grass along the Werribee River, roughly 600 metres by 150, sitting between the end of Redgum Close and the weir itself. The draw is simple: enormous room to sprint in an off-lead reserve that stays uncrowded despite its size. It is unfenced and touches the water, so it suits dogs with solid recall rather than bolters.

The rules

Wyndham City Council runs this as a designated off-lead area, with a short list of conditions. Keep the lead on while entering and exiting and along the adjacent shared path, carry a leash on your person at all times, keep your dog within sight and able to recall it immediately, and make sure a current registration tag is on the collar. Dogs stay out of the river, leave wildlife alone, and you bag and bin what they produce.

The terrain

A big grassy field ringed by native woodland, with walking tracks along the river edge. It is exposed: little shade and plenty of sun and wind, and bindi thorns hide in the grass in the warmer months, so check paws and shoes on the way out.

Max: unfenced and right on the river is a lot to ask of a dog with patchy recall. If yours still gets distracted, the fenced runs elsewhere in Werribee are the safer call.

Facilities

Not much, and plan for that. No water taps and no bins inside the field itself, so bring a full bottle, a bowl and your own bags. Access is from suburban streets rather than a car park.

Getting there

Three entry points: Redgum Close, John Ball Place and De Garis Place, each with street parking out front. Werribee Station is the nearest rail link, followed by a short rideshare, and cyclists and walkers can arrive on foot via the Werribee River Trail.

Close by with the dogs

If your dog needs a fence, the Levittown Rise Dog Park is the enclosed alternative, and the Civic Centre Reserve Dog Off Leash Area is another open off-lead option closer to town. For coffee afterwards, Wolf on Watton welcomes dogs.

When to go

Weekend mornings and weekday late afternoons draw the regulars, though the sheer size keeps it from feeling crowded. Mid-week mid-morning is the quiet window. In summer, go early and bring water, because there is no relief from the sun out in the open.
