The D1 Drainage Reserve off-leash corridor runs along the drainage line between Mossfiel and Callander Road in Hoppers Crossing, managed by Wyndham City Council. The length is the draw. Instead of one enclosed square, dogs get a linear stretch of grassed reserve to run and sniff at pace, which suits high-energy dogs and recall training alike.

The dog setup

This section is open and unfenced, so it works only for dogs with reliable recall under effective control. Waste bags and bins are provided along the corridor, but there is no dedicated dog water point, so carry a bottle and bowl. Ground is flat and grassy, easy on stiff joints, and parts of the reserve run near playgrounds, where dogs need to stay clear of the equipment.

Wyndham's off-leash conditions apply: carry a lead even while your dog runs, lead up when entering, exiting or crossing surrounding on-leash paths, keep your dog from rushing or worrying other people and pets, ensure registration tags are current, and pick up immediately. Dogs that cannot be recalled reliably are better served at one of the area's fenced parks.

Worth knowing

Weekday evenings after about 4:30pm and weekend mornings are the busy windows. Mid-morning or early afternoon midweek is calm. The separate Willmott Drive to Derrimut Road section of the same drainage reserve has its own leash-up hours around school times, so check signage if you wander onto that stretch rather than assuming this section's rules apply throughout.

Getting there and parking

The corridor sits between the Derrimut Road end near Mossfiel and Callander Road in Hoppers Crossing, about 30 minutes south west of the Melbourne CBD via the Princes Freeway. Street parking is available on the bordering residential streets such as Callander Road and Glenora Drive. Hoppers Crossing Station is the nearest rail hub, with local buses covering the surrounding streets.
