Warrandyte River Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Warrandyte River Reserve runs along the Yarra River on Yarra Street, and it is the off-leash walk most locals in the area default to: a 24-hour off-leash reserve with shaded riverside tracks and easy water access for a swim. The one thing to get right before you go is that it is not all off-leash, so read the rules block.

The rules. Most of the reserve is off-leash provided your dog is under effective voice control. The exception is a 260-metre on-leash section between 183 Yarra Street and the Kangaroo Ground-Warrandyte Road bridge, where leads are required. Dogs must also be on-lead within 15 metres of playgrounds, BBQ areas and during organised events, and are not permitted in the fenced wonguim wilam playspace. Carry bags and clean up; fines apply.

The water and terrain. Natural unsealed tracks follow the river with good tree cover, and there is direct access to the Yarra for dogs that like to swim. Currents can pick up after rain, so keep a close eye on strong swimmers during high flows.

What's there. Riverside walking tracks, benches along the path, bins, and water access. Parking sits in pockets along Yarra Street near the main entrance.

Getting there. Roughly 40 minutes northeast of the Melbourne CBD, directly off Yarra Street. Street parking fills on sunny weekends and market days, so arrive early. Buses run to Warrandyte Village from Doncaster, then it is a short walk to the riverbank.

When to go. Early mornings and weekdays are quietest; sunny weekends and public holidays get busy. Good for social dogs who like a riverside run and a swim.
