Milton Gray Reserve is a small neighbourhood park on Wattletree Road, a good option when you want a quick off-leash sniff and run rather than a big destination outing, with off-leash hours running from 5pm to 9am daily.

The rules. Dogs can run off-leash from 5pm to 9am. Between 9am and 5pm they must be on-leash. The reserve isn't fully fenced, though the playground within it is, so a reliable recall matters more here than at a fenced ground. Keep dogs leashed inside the playground and sports areas, and pick up after them straight away.

What's there. A water station with a dog bowl, waste bins, and smart lighting that makes it usable for an evening visit in winter. There's also a playground and basketball court on site for kids, worth knowing if you're visiting with a family in tow.

Getting there. The reserve is at 216 Wattletree Road, Malvern. Parking is available on-site and on surrounding streets such as Cummins Grove, and the number 5 tram on Wattletree Road stops close by.

Nearby with the dogs. Wattletree Road and nearby Glenferrie Road have a good run of cafes with outdoor seating that welcome dogs, an easy stop before or after a visit.

This one isn't fully fenced, so don't let a dog with patchy recall off the lead until you've sized up the boundary yourself.

When to go. Mid-morning or mid-afternoon before 5pm is quietest. Just after 5pm on weekdays draws a social crowd of locals finishing work, good if your dog likes company, less so if it needs space.
